The Macleay Hotel staff are exceptional, from making the booking until the end of our week long stay everyone could not do enough to make us feel welcome and grant all our wishes. Many thanks to all. We enjoyed a family room on the ninth floor with spectacular views towards the city and the bridge and facing onto Macleay Street. We had no problem with street noise. We enjoyed opening the windows, hearing the birds and watching the locals. The neighbourhood reminded us a little bit of Paris. So many nice eateries, smart shops, posh dogs of all sizes going for walks. Our studio was compact but well planned : the beds are comfortable, there is enough storage and the kitchenette has everything you need to make a small meal, the hairdryer, iron and ironing board and kettle were as good as brand new and of good quality. There is a large commercial washing machine and dryer on each floor ($3/wash) and both worked very well. The Macleay hotel's location is fantastic. There is a Woolworths supermarket a chemist and an upmarket deli (Bottega del Vino) across the road from the hotel. You can catch the Bus 311 on the Woolworths side of the hotel into the city and it only takes between 10-15 minutes. For centre city access get off the bus in Park Street between Castlereagh and George St. For the return trip there is a Bus 311 stop in Park Street near Castlereagh St. Bus 311 will drop you a few meters from the Macleay hotel in Macleay street. This hotel is perfectly suited to people who do not want to walk to the Kings Cross train station or who do not want to walk into the city via the Art Gallery of New South Wales or the Botanical Gardens. The walk to Kings Cross station is only about 7 to 10minutes, pleasant and safe during day time hours. From Kings Cross station you can catch the train to Bondi Junction and then bus to Bondi (Bus 333). You can travel on Bus 311 via the centre of the city to Circular Quay and if you get off at the last stop you only have to walk a short distance via Argyle Street into The Rocks. You can also travel on Bus 311 via Darlinghurst and Oxford Street and eventually end up at the Central Railway station. The hotel is surrounded by many good quality cafes and restaurants. We especially enjoyed breakfast items from the "Bourke Street bakery" in Crick Avenue and the "Apollo" (corner Macleay and Crick ) restaurant for delicious Greek food. Billy Kwong (Chinese restaurant) is right next to the Macleay Hotel. Fratelli Paradiso (Italian) and The Fish shop are located in Challis Ave. Walk to the end of Challis Ave, turn left and you will find the steps to take you down to Woolloomooloo Finger wharf. Bus 311 also stops at Woolloomooloo Finger wharf. From there you can climb another staircase and you are at the Art Gallery of New South Wales which is open until 10 pm on a Wednesday night. If you feel like Japanese food, Busshari is located at 119 Macleay street, a short walk towards Kings Cross station. If you visit Sydney make sure to get the "Opal" travel card to use on the entire public transport system and the best deal is on a Sunday when all travel is capped at a maximum of $2.50/person. I recommend if you are a family 2 adults, one child or two, it is cheaper and quicker to take a taxi from the airport to the Macleay and it cost about $45. For the return taxi ride we only paid $35. We loved our stay here, and cannot wait to come back in the future as there is still so much more to enjoy.
