My sister and I stayed at the Ibis at Darling Harbour to attend a concert at the Entertainment Centre. My sister has never stayed at Darling Harbour so I booked a Harbour View Room for her to enjoy the sights during the day and night. The Ibis has access to the Monorail just outside of the building, is in easy walking distance to all the attractions at Darling Harbour and has a shopping mall just behind which was great when it rained. Upon arrival at the Ibis I was advised that the Harbour View room I had booked had been updated to a family room and although we would not see the water the lights at night were very pretty! When we checked out the room I was dissapointed to find that the family room was just one more bed which made the room smaller and we were on the floor above the bar with a view of the Harbourside Shopping Complex building. I approached the receptionist and explained my dissapointment with not getting what I booked and she was very helpful and found us a room on the 8th floor which had lovely views of the Harbour. Although, I do not understand why we didn't get a room like this at the start, the room was very nice. Not huge but had everything we needed. The beds were very comfortable, the room was nice and clean and it had a bench and seat area under the window to sit and look out at the sights. I would definitely stay here again although I would confirm that the room is exactly as I have booked.

If you are just looking for a good location, then stay there but if you are looking for a good night's sleep and a bit of comfort, don't touch it with a ten foot pole. My company was charged $330 for my room - daylight robbery - when the last time I stayed in Sydney, it cost $250 at the Radisson for a stunning room.
Firstly, the rooms do not have curtains, they have horrible rattan-type blind things that look like they've been pulled out of someone's garden shed. The night light pours in so the room never gets sufficiently dark. The duvet on the bed was a threadbare excuse for one and in the cupboard was a hard old-fashioned blanket that could have been my Grandmothers. I had to try and choose between hanging the blanket over the blinds to block out the light or put it on top of the duvet to keep me confortable. In the end I chose the bed and spent the night trying to sleep in semi-darkness. Over and above this you can hear everything that goes on in the corridors, which incidentally are a horrible, dark, purple/brown colour and the room doors deep red.
There is no room service and the 'restaurant' downstairs closes at 9pm. You can order a meal from a choice of 4 or 5 items from their 'grab and go' menu, which means you order it and then they phone you when it is ready so you can go and pick it up at reception.
You be the judge.

When I arrived I was concerned that it wasn't going to be conveniently situated. However, access from the back - which overlooks Darling Harbour, offers a fifteen minute walk to the ferrys, five minutes from fromn a nuber of good eateries, five minutes from the Maritime Museum and if you're there near the Chines New Year, superb views of the fireworks.

Room Tip: All rooms would be quiet but rear rooms get better views.

For the price, pop across the Harbour and stay at a 5* in the city and enjoy the walk. The rooms make you feel like you should be selling vaccuums in the 60's - small, depressing, and the bed is IBISymal.
