“Don't stay here unless you like Australiana music 24/7”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2012

We live in Sydney and wanted to stay in the city the night before flying overseas ..... big mistake! On a positive note, the location is great. Close to the Opera House, ferry terminal and Harbour Bridge. The beds are soft and very comfy and the room well appointed. But .... I was kept awake by the "Australiana" music coming from the neighbouring pub which seemed to get louder with each passing hour! When I enquired at the front desk I was told the music "should stop" about 1 am. The hotel walls are very thin and I was also disturbed by the constant banging of other guest doors. Feeling tired and frustrated I called a taxi and when home for the night! Meanwhile, hubby who could sleep pegged on a clothes line, snored on! I would never stay here again. Sydney is a very expensive city and there are plenty of other hotels to choose from which I'm sure would give you a better night's sleep.

Room Tip: If decide to stay here, ask for a room at the back of the building, away from the pub.

We loved our stay at the Holiday Inn, it is in the Rocks area and is about a 5-10 minute walk from Circular Quay..depending on your speed. The Harbour Bridge is 5 minutes away and there are fabulous views of the bridge, the Opera House and the Quay from the rooftop terrace. The pool is small but adequate.
The reception area is large and the welcome was great, very friendly and efficient. We booked a king room, there was no view but it overlooked the side of the hotel and was quiet, apart from a bit of noise on the Saturday, but that didn't bother us. The bed was big and comfy. If I have one niggle about the room it is that the bathroom is very small, but it was clean and serviceable.
There is a charge for wiFi but we found this almost everywhere in Australia. I paid $5 to use the computer in the reception for 30 mins...but had 24 hours to use it and as I was only doing a couple of quick checks it was fine for me.
We had breakfast included in our rate and it was Ok, a typical Holiday Inn breakfast with cooked to order eggs.
Taxis were readily available outside the hotel. We actually walked to Darling Harbour, it took us about 40 minutes but it was lovely, then we got the ferry back to Circular Quay. We didn't do the Harbour Cruise but took the ferry to Manly beach and had some great views from that. I wouldn't really recommend the open top bus tour..there is a lot of traffic in Sydney and the buses are old and smell of petrol fumes...better to walk or take ferries and taxis.
If I ever go back to Sydney I will definitely stay at the Old Sydney again.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn in Sydney in March 2012, as part of our trip around Australia. Understand it is a 4 star hotel, and would probably agree. Where it is 5 star is the location, overlooking the Opera House, and right next to Sydney Bridge. The views from the roof pool are breathtaking.

The area of Rocks, is where it seemed to be all happening. It is right next to the port which takes your to most places boat. Also lots of places to eat. Only complaint we had was the general cost of everything, I understand it is to do with the UK pound against the Australian Dollar. Everything seemed to be double UK prices.

Would certainly give it a 4.5 rating.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room with a view of the harbour

Dear JohnDixon

Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback. You may be happy to know the views from our rooftop pool have made it into the top 100 in Australia!

The area of the Rocks we are in is very prestigious and a great spot for any visitor to Sydney. Coming from the UK recently myself the city is quite pricey as the GPB weakens. But the quality you get is great.

Hope to welcome you back soon!

Kind regards

I stayed with my husband in this hotel for 3 nights. The location was superb. It was easy to reach from Circular Quey station and like 5 min walk. To be able to see the view from our room was spectacular thing. The roof is a must to get to it, and enjoy the Harbour Bridge & the Opera House. It was perfect for pics. Also, the staff were friendly. We had a very quick and smooth check in & out.

The Hotel was spacious; I mean the lobby, the room and even elevators. The beds were big and comforting. Bathroom was good. Internet & wireless was there but not free. There was a good selection TV channels. One more thing, it was one of few hotels nowadays that don't put complimentary water.

As to finding nearby shops & restaurants, they are at the Circular Quey & all the way inside the CBD.

We would definitely stay there again if we go to Sydney again.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better, and take a room viewing the Harbour Bridge. However, our room was...

Our stay in Sydney was the second part of a 3 - centre break with Fremantle WA and Singapore.

After having read many reviews of various hotels in Sydney, we eventually opted for the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. We weren't disappointed. This hotel deserves 10/10 for location. The Harbour Bridge was literally a 5 minute walk away and the Opera House only 10 minutes walk. Circular Quay was two streets away and the Sunday market is right on your doorstep. Our room was clean and modern with a choice of soft and firm pillows and one of the comfiest beds I've ever slept in. The bathroom, however, was small. The fittings were modern and it was well equipped but if you like a bit of space this could be a problem.

Sydney is noisy, bustling and busy with more bars, pubs, and restaurants than you can shake a stick at. However, if you like to eat late be aware that a lot of the restaurants seem to close by 10 so this may not suit some.

Getting out and about in Sydney is very easy with ferries departing from Circular Quay to various destinations.

Poopular with tourists is a round-the-harbour cruise which gives you the chance to see the multi-million dollar homes and pretty little inlets. Ratonga Zoo is another popular day out or take the ferry down to Manly Beach, a crescent of pale, clean sand patrolled by lifeguards. Manly is great for trying to learn to surf or for just sitting and watching how the experts do it. Bondi Beach is a bus or taxi ride away but some of the locals we spoke to said Manly was nicer and less crowded.

A real 'must-do' is to take a trip to the Blue Mountains an area of outstanding natural beauty. On your way there call in at Faversham Wildlife Park and take the opportunity to get up close and personal with a Koala or one of the Wallabys. When you reach the Blue Mountains Heritage Site take the Skywalk Cablecar ($9) across the valley to Scenic World then take the almost vertical railway car down the the bottom of the valley. You have to hang on tight for this section of your journey. It's a bit of a knee trembler but great fun. When at the bottom of the valley wander along the rainforest walkways then ride back up on the smaller Cableway Cablecar ($21). This is a great day out and gives you the perfect opportunity to get out of the city for a while. Most trips include the costs of cablecars, railway, and wildlife park admission in the general cost.

Sydney is easy to get around by any means of transport but the easier options (if you are going further afield) are ferry or rail. Buses and taxis are plentiful but the heavy traffic in and around Sydney (especially at peak times) is a nightmare. Most modes of transport can be picked up around Circular Quay.

Prices generally are high and most organised excursions are expensive. The Harbour Bridge climb is extremely popular but again the cost of this may put some people off.
Sydney is one of those cities that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. With its iconic Bridge and Opera House set in a stunning harbour it is still classed by many as the ultimate desination.
