How lovely is it for a vegetarian to be able to choose ANYTHING on the menu? The food is so tasty and the servings very generous.

“A new experience, one I would repeat”
Reviewed 1 February 2012

I decided to do something a bit different for my birthday. My daughter is a vegetarian and my son despises vegetarian food, which doesn't make life too easy.

We really enjoyed the food. The "chicken" and "beef" rendang were excellent as were all the dim sims and vegetable dishes. I didn't personally think the mongolian "lamb" worked so well.

The decor is modern and utilitarian and the service is fast and pleasant. This isn't fine dining but it is good value and enjoyable and different.

“Fresh, high quality and excellent vegetarian vietnamese food”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

We have been there a few times and are always amazed by the excellent food. The staff were friendly enough to describe in detail how they make the soybean products from scratch. All meals are home made and all vegetables bought by the owner himself every morning from the market. These are probably the main reasons (plus a talented cook of course) that the food is so incredibly tasty and that one feels so ...energetic after a visit to Au Lac.

We also love the athmosphere there and the staff is always friendly and make you feel most welcome, even when we once came just before closing hours. These are the reasons to that this is our favourite Canberra restaurant (and this from a very picky Australian-Italian and a quite picky Swede). Finally I should add that it is cheap.

“Intriguing menu and excellent service”
Reviewed 5 December 2011

My fiancé and I decided to try lunch here on the weekend after we walked past and became intrigued by their menu. Walking in, the decor was somewhat uninspiring but the atmosphere was relaxing with instrumental classics playing softly in the background and seats up next to the window for people-watching in busy Dickson. The staff were extremely polite and attentive, and freely opened up about their inspiration for the restaurant and their culinary tactics.

As for the food – well! We decided to try a range of things to test the different styles. The texture of the chicken nuggets was perfect, we had to examine extremely closely and actually pull one apart to check that it wasn’t in fact chicken – it was just really cleverly shredded soy products. The beef rendang scored very highly in flavour and spice, as well as mimicking the texture of beef to the letter. The laksa is, as previous reviewers have said, simply excellent – clearly the chefs here have mastered the balance of spice to flavour. Presentation of the food was delightful, and the portion sizes are large – especially the laksa! The prices also made this restaurant great value, especially when combined with the beautiful presentation and care taken to create the most flavourful dishes possible.

Overall this experience was eye-opening and exciting. I have not encountered such clever and delicious meat substitution before; guilt free eating has never been as satisfactory as it was here! I highly recommend this restaurant, especially to new vegetarians/vegans who are exploring their culinary options.
