On previous visits to Canberra we had stayed at the Novotel but it has looked increasingly tired over the last few years and the final straw in deciding to find somewhere else was the increase to $25 a night for parking on our last visit earlier this year.
The Avenue Hotel more than fitted the bill. Reasonably priced, particularly when the parking is included, modern, centrally located and with apartments rather than just a hotel room.
We stayed for two nights in an apartment on the 5th floor in Tower 1 facing Northbourne Avenue ((there are two Towers and our friends had an apartment on the same floor facing the apartments in the other Tower so I think we got the better deal). The apartment was very large with the layout being a small corridor to the left as you came through the front door which lead to the large bedroom and off which there was the bathroom, whilst straight ahead you walked into the very large combined living/dining/kitchen area which had a common wall with the bedroom.
The bedroom had a huge queen-sized bed (mattress was very comfortable and there were extra pillows in the wardrobe), with small round glass tables with lamps on them on either side of the bed, a large stand alone flat screen TV, a two door wardrobe with hanging and shelf space (slippers and dressing gowns inside) plus a safe inside the wardrobe.

The combined lounge/dining/kitchen had a three seater lounge and a single lounge chair with a foot stool, a small coffee table, a free standing lamp, a flat screen TV, a desk with a chair and a lamp, a mini bar, a large table that seated six with chairs and a reasonably equipped kitchenette. The kitchenette ran along one wall and included a full sized fridge with separate freezer, a microwave, a small induction stove top, a dishwasher, sink, nespresso machine with pods, toaster, kettle, sufficient crockery, glassware and cutlery plus some pots and pans etc.
The lounge opened onto a small outside balcony where there was a round table and two chairs.
The bathroom was also large and had a very good walk in shower (no bath) that had both rain water and hand held shower nozzles. Shower pressure was good.
The room and bathroom were very clean and serviced daily.
WIFI was included and worked well although we had to log back in on several occasions but this was a simple process.
There was security key access to the room direct from the car park.
Staff at reception at check-in and check-out were very helpful and efficient.
We did not have any meals in the restaurant attached to the hotel as the hotel has a rear access onto Lonsdale Street where there are a number of places to eat both there and in nearby Civic. We did though have a drink in the bar which was quite comfortable.
The only issue that I had was with the card access points for entry and departure from the car park which were both extremely badly placed as evidenced by the many scrapes on the walls and bollards from cars which obviously had difficulty.
Would absolutely stay here again.More
