Firstly I have to say the hostel was lovely, very clean and with lots of space.....although there was nothing to do. The hostel did have an activities board but for the bar next to them. They had nothing really that good. Canberra closes early in the evening and there isn't a lot to do. Unless you have a specific time table you want to follow two days should be ample. I completed everything I wanted to do in 8 hours. The one interesting thing I did find was the segway tours by the river (where the international flag display is). Other than this I wouldn't stay at the hostel again as I wouldn't be going back to Canberra. The staff seemed ok but weren't the warmest but I find this with larger organisations like YHA. The people aren't really interested in you, other hostels I have stayed in they welcome you like an old friend which is lovely.

The swimming pool and sauna area were ok, the pool was a bit small, two strokes and you would be at the other end. It closed at 10pm. The only good thing about this hostel was that you were allowed to bring you're own alcohol in. I tried to mix with some of the other guests but found myself twiddling my thumbs and drinking alone. No one really wanted to mix with one another. There were also a large number of people aged 50+ and also a lot of children running around which made me feel uneasy. I think that should you be having a good time it would probably of been frowned upon. The final issue is the rooftop, it closed at 10pm so you had to drink in the kitchen or little cafe area where people where using the internet terminals.

Positive things first: Great location, friendly and helpful staff, nice rooftop BBQ area, comfy TV room. Nonetheless, being used to the usually high hygienic standards of other YHA Hostels we've been to across Australia we were really disappointed about the cleaning in this YHA. The mens and ladies bathrooms on the 3rd floor (where we stayed) hadn't been cleaned for three days, one shower (of two existing showers per floor per gender!!!) was broken all the time and didn't get fixed and, sorry to say that, the kitchen and food shelves were dirty and simply not well looked after. Doesn't make it pleasant to cook & eat there, guys. The kitchen wasn't equipped to cook a decent meal, either (not even cutting knives or the like). We were really disappointed compared to what we've seen in other YHAs.

Hi Peter
Thank you for your review of Canberra City YHA - we take all reviews very seriously and your comments have been discussed with the hostel manager and staff. You'll be glad to hear that the kitchen equipment is being re-stocked - unfortunately, in hostels a lot of kitchen gear can 'disappear' out of the hostel, so this is a task that has to be done frequently.

Nice hotel, fairly quiet, alright location (there is almost nothing at all open in the evening so make sure you eat/shop early!)
Kitchen was fine, tv room was also fine. Swimming pool not very appealing (no-one used it whilst I was there).

The building is new, the facilities are modern but for some reason this building attracted losers like no other place we stayed. We heard that Canberra was a boring place, but the yahoos must all come to the YHA to party.
We've stayed at party hostels before, which works when there are sections so that people can do what they want without stepping on others' toes. This place had folks fuelling up on the "no alcohol" patio with others yelling and screaming out front as well as cranking their music in their rooms. The staff, theoretically on duty 24 hours, were unable or unwilling to enforce the hostel rules. We had to endure tuneless renditions of drunken songs at midnight and a drawn out battle between two geniuses trying to stage a fight but were too drunk to figure out how to do it. Things quieted down by about 4 am.
Otherwise, the kitchen is pretty good except for no drinking glasses and not enough fridge space. The staff are helpful with information about the city. The pool is tiny.
You can't properly sleep there, so I can't recommend it. I guess that if you want a place to drink yourself sick and ramble incoherently late into the night, it's for you.

Room Tip: Avoid a room at the front of the building.

Thank you for your review of Canberra City YHA, and YHA takes very seriously any comments on our hostels where guests have not been happy. The hostel manager has seen and looked into the issues you raise. There is a bar underneath the hostel – this is not run by YHA, and there is no entry into it from the hostel – only from the street. We work closely with the managers to reduce any noise impact on guests. The rooftop patio referred is our BBQ area where guests can cook, eat and relax during the day and evening, but it is closed by night staff at 10pm.

The Canberra YHA is central and convenient. It's not far from the transit centre. It is a fair way from a lot of the attractions, but I liked that you could hire a bike to get around: Canberra is fairly flat so that makes it easy. Also it's a lovely walk over Lake Burley Griffin to get to the attractions.

The hostel was amazingly clean. I stayed the weekend of a big music festival, you'd expect the bathrooms to get a bit messy but the cleaners really stayed on top of it!

I'd stay here again for sure.
