“A dated hotel in a great location with great views!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2012

I recently stayed at "Capital Towers" for 3 nights late last month.
Location was great, views were awesome but the rooms were dated and furnishings old and tired.
The best find I had near the hotel were funky little cafes and a sensational day spa called Soma Day Spa. I had one of the best massages there I think I have ever had.
So hotel itself was average, location great and local cafe's quirky.
I had a nice time.

Room Tip: Refer to it as the Capital Towers.... There are no obvious signage referring to it as the breakfree...

The first thing you need to know about this place as it's commonly known as Capital Tower and not Breakfree. The taxi driver had no idea about Breakfree, but knew Capital Tower when I mentioned it. There's not prominent Breakfree signage at all.

I stayed here for a conference in March, and had a great apartment with a fantastic view over the lake and towards Parliament House. There's really not much to the place apart from rooms - it doesn't have much of a hotel feel, which I guess some people like. It would be ideal if you needed a longer stay, as it feels like a residence.

I had TV problems like one of the earlier posters - I had to use the remote to change it to Digital. It was weird that it wasn't set to that as a default.

It's a short walk up the hill to shops and restaurants. I had breakfast at the cafe/mini market across the road, which was great. The groceries there were expensive, but the cafe prices were very reasonable. There's an IGA further up the hill for a bigger shop.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms are really nice, but they cost more to book. I booked a standard room and got a...

I'm lying in bed looking out the window at the early morning sunshine on the lake, the sky is blue there are a couple of yachts sailing across the still water and a little earlier four hotwire balloons went floating past the balcony. The view is superlative, the staff are friendly and helpful, it's close to the restaurants and cafes of the city and just across the road (there is a pedestrian/cycle bridge) from the lake shore which is surrounded by the National Library, Gallery, Portrait Gallery, Questacon, Carillion, High Court and National Museum. There's bike hire 100 yards away and it's an easy ride to Old and New Parlaiment Houses or the War Memorial. There is no hotel in Canberra more convenient or more accessible to these venues. we spent yesterday riding in the sun and laying by the pool, until a family arrived and the smell of them using the hotel's bar b que drove us inside for lunch. I've already been up early this morning to use the gym and if the weather holds we might play a game of tennis on one of the hotel's two tennis courts this afternoon. A cafe would be handy (there 's one across the road but it 's a bit exxy) but otherwise this place has everything you could want and more

Room Tip: Get a room on the lakeside not the city side and as high up as possible to maximise the view. Ask fo...

We have stayed here several times because of it's central, quiet location and ease of getting into (and out of) the underground carpark. Lakeside rooms have breathtaking views of lake Burley Griffin and Parliament house from both inside the apartment and outside on the large balconies. City side apartments have OK views, but do not have the large balconies. Civic, ANU and parliament house are all within easy walking distance. There is a supermarket near by and heaps of trendy cafes and restaurants to choose from.
It's a bit of a lucky draw as to how your modern your room and facilities will be - the standard of the furniture also varies.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

SUperficially okay - large two bedroom apartment, clean apart from bath which was stained and scratched. However:
(1) my apartment only offered the 5 analogue TV stations - I reckon it is reasonable to expect at least all of the free-to-air stations in a capital city!!
(2) shower arm was attached so low on the wall over bath that to get under the rose you would need to be less than 1.5 metres tall (literally), making it impossible for standard adult to wash hair or face under the shower. Not good enough for the price and claimed standard.

Combined, these two issues would make this apartment completely unacceptable to me for a stay of more than one night, especially at $190 a night. In addition, I could not find the temperature control or an information booklet telling me how to adjust the temperature.

On the plus side, it was quiet (from street noise, although the toilet cistern kept filling loudly through the night) and it is in a good location in City area, close to university and a short walk to city centre shopping, law courts etc. Limited free undercover parking for guests (note, this is an apartment hotel - most apartments are occupied by permanent residents).

On reflection, it's possible not all guest apartments have the same issues as they may all have different owners (?), but I would not stay here again due entirely to the impractical shower and inadequate TV stations in the room I was allocated.

Room Tip: If more than 5 TV stations are important to you - ask when you book; likewise if you like to actuall...
