What an amazing memorial to those who served in the war. The fact that it was no charge, was incredible. We could have stayed all day - the exhibitions were fantastic and very emotional. We took our 7 year old who really understood it all - the Discovery Centre made it all the more 'real' for him - in a helicopter; with a periscope, in a trench. If you do just one thing in Canberra - go to the War Memorial.
If you have a relative that lost his life in the war, look up the archives on line at the war memorial website - and it will show you the spot where you can pay your respects.

I spent several hours here but arrived early enough to attend a free walking tour. The tour
greatly enhanced my ability to appreciate the effort that has gone into this memorial.
The two upper floors have thousands of names of WWI and WWII war dead. Our guide would stop, point out a name and tell us about the soldier...such as the underage Aussie who joined the forces and died before he turned 16. The memorial displays battles from the many wars and it is complete with films, re-enactments, equipment, and a room for the Victorian Cross recipients. Their stories of valor are sombering.
This is a place which should not be missed.

The memorial is worth a visit if you have any interest in Australia's history. Our few military involvements affect almost every other aspect of our history that the memorial is so reflective of the whole nation.
There is a great respect that the displays are done with - ever with the focus on sharing the triumphs and sacrafices, but not promoting the concept of war itself.
It took me 2/3 of the day, so allow a fair bit of time to wander & read.

Spent 2 hours here, and saw about a tenth of the whole place. It is amazing, and really highlighted how little I know about Australian history. Is easily as good as other war memorials around the world. And I was pleasantly surprised that it's only a donation to get in.

We did one of the free guided tours of the memorial and the guide was very knowlegeable and informative. They take about 90min and give you a good idea of what you would like to look at after the tour. There is a lot to see a the museum so you have to choose a few areas rather than cover everything.
