The Australian War Memorial is at the top of my "must see" list for Canberra visitors.
It has some amazing displays of memorabilia from the various conflicts Australia has been involved in.
For me, the most striking item is a boat from the Gallipoli landings in WW1 with bullet holes clearly visible, but that is only one item from many thousands each of which has a story attached.
Touring the Memorial with a guided group is recommended, as the volunteer guides provide a different perspective on the displays, and the conditions under which the members of the Australian Defence Force have served.
I would strongly recommend allowing adequate time to visit the Memorial, with a minimum of one full day to explore the different galleries.
