My family and I just spent a week in the wonderfully serene and enchanted gite 'Chez Antoinette'. Frances and Martin are exceptionally thoughtful and generous hosts. Highlights: bikes supplied for the whole family for touring nearby villages, the woodburning stove and barbeque, the fully equipped kitchen, gorgeous beds and linens, a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived, all the information we could hope to find about the region, a delightful lake for nearby swims, and the Auvergne itself - an unspoiled gem! We wouldn't hesitate to return for another relaxing week. Thanks so much to our tremendously kind hosts!
My wife and I spent three nights in Chez Antoinette at La Vachere in early May on our way south to Pals in northern Spain. La Vachere made for the perfect stopover point when travelling south from Calais. It is approximately 25 mins from junction 13 of the A75. We had arrived in Calais on the ferry at 11.40 am and were at La Vachere for 8pm which includes navigating the Boulevard Peripherique in Paris. We had time on our first evening for a glass of wine and a bite to eat. When we departed a few days later it was only a simple 4 and a bit hours drive to our final destination in Spain. The drive south takes your over the breathing taking Millau Bridge on the A75. An exquisite feat of design by Sir Norman Foster.
Antoinette is one of two gites available at LaVachere. Each has its own unique identity. Antoinette is a well appointed gite with all the home comforts – uk satellite tv, free wifi, dishwasher, washing machine, cooker and hob, microwave, log fire (ideal for the early summer evenings). The upstairs bedroom and ensuite are nothing short of perfect. A large extremely comfortable double bed and a generous ensuite with shower and heated towel rail. There is piping hot water and plenty of room, what is not to like. There is a fold down sofa in the living room so four could easily stay.
Issoire , the nearest major town is ideal for an explore and the big Carrefour Supermarket with all its amenities – café, restaurants, bakers etc.- is just off the A75 at Issoire at Junction 12. Carrefour fuel prices also beat the motorway services stations by quite some margin.
There is loads to do in the Auvernge but if you want to relax or break up a trip south I would highly recommend LaVachere.
If you want more info please just contact me. Last year I stayed at Chez Elise which is perfect too.
