My husband and I had the most incredible and relaxing three days in Cape Leveque in June. We stayed at Kooljaman Wilderness Camp. During the days we spent our time exploring the local area, but as dusk approached it was time for wine and cheese on the beach, taking in the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen!

A Tagalong 4WD tour with the charismatic Brian Lee was another massive highlight. As one of the areas Traditional Owners Brian shares his immense cultural knowledge and the history of the Bardi people in his own unique way. We spent the day swimming, fishing and exploring some of the world’s most pristine beaches and estuaries. From the children, to the more mature in our group, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. Brian’s tour is a must-do!

Many people just take a day trip from Broome to the Cape but I would say invest the extra time and money to spend a few days in the area. If you don’t have a 4WD, hire one (as we did) to make the 3-hour journey from Broome. The road is not sealed all the way and it does get a bit rough here and there, but it’s all part of the experience. If you are self-catering, I would also recommend hiring a camp fridge if you don’t have one in tow (well worth the minimal investment for a few days). And remember pack plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent, and Kooljaman doesn’t sell alcohol so you must BYO.

One last thing to note, the staff were fabulous! My hubby lost his sunnies on the last day. We let the front desk know before we left. We didn’t expect to ever see them again, but lo and behold, the very next week, they showed up in the mail!!

We spent a couple of days at Kooljamin at Cape Leveque and it was a wonderful experience and well worth the time and trouble getting there. Its 4wd only getting in and out. Parts of the road are rough but no big problem for us in the dry.

Staff were all friendly and very helpful. We stayed in a log cabin close to the beach and how fantastic it was. If you want Hilton standards then don't bother but if you want an authentic, fun and laid back experience then make the effort. Our cabin was very basic and clean with a very comfortable bed under the mozzie net. It had a fridge and BBQ outside for cooking if you want, but little else. Our cabin shared a separate toilet and shower with one other cabin. Take a torch for night time trips to the toilet.

The restaurant was just great run by a bunch of enthusiastic young folk from here and all over the world. Gotta love the pizza night. Food was great and no alcohol was no problem at all.

The beaches were fantastic and the surrounding area was something to see. Check out the night sky when really dark.

Lots to do and lots of interesting people to meet.

It was a joy to share the time there and for us Kooljaman is highly recommended.

We did a day trip to Cape Leveque, One Arm Point and then a seaplane to the Horizontal Falls. One of our most favourite travel experiences. It was a huge day and so varied and well worth the money.

Decided to revisit here 27 years after our first visit. 3 week delay as roads were closed due to rain and had to wait for another opening.
Staff very helpful. Booked a log cabin for a few nights and took our own food and drink... insect repellant a must.
Road up was corrugated but fine, drive to conditions.
Cabins have what you need for your stay including mossie nets on beds. Cabin 1 has ocean views.
Walked everywhere, check tide times for fishing, can walk right around cape at low tide. Please note signs and stay off cliffs as they are very fragile, erosion a problem.
Great sunrises and sunsets, both over water. Got some amazing sunrise/sunset photos. Shop has basics, cafe near cabin provided a great toasted sandwich and coffee on a wet afternoon.
Must visit at least once!

The colours are stunning, red rocks and white sands. Warm sea water just topped it off. We were part of the day trip to the horizontal falls.
