It's a spacious suite - bedroom, living room with kitchen, all clean and modern. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen has all you'd ever need, it's very quiet, and Bruce the owner left material for a fine breakfast for me to cook (eggs, bacon, mushrooms, toast) and there's a good selection of teas and coffee. It was mid-winter, so cold, but the heater in the bedroom was efficient. And Bruce was helpful with information about where to go. (Though he recommended the dinner at the Roadhouse in Laver's Hill, and I'm afraid I don't share his enthusiasm.)
But the location is isolated - the closest supermarket, cafe or restaurant is 30 minutes' drive away, and there's no Wi-Fi for guests to use. Also, the shower was difficult to control - either scalding hot or stone cold and impossible to adjust to a comfortable temperature.
All in all, pretty good.

Bruce C, Owner at Great Ocean Walk Retreat, responded to this reviewResponded 1 July 2018

I’m sorry that you found our rural setting isolated . Many guests come to enjoy the natural beauty of Glenaire. We are reliant on satellite for our Wifi with restricted downloads.Lavers Hill ,10 minutes away , has 5 food outlets and the Pub has a reputation for its freshly prepared meals.
We try to ensure our guests are aware that our nearest supermarket is at Apollo Bay, 20 minutes drive away and to shop before arriving.
I apologise for your shower. We have serviced the head.
We welcome your feedback

When we visited the weather was pretty awful - 45mm of rain over 3 days with gale force winds. So it was great to have a warm and comfortable place to retreat to after getting soaked. It was also lovely to sit in the lounge and watch the scudding rain though the picture window. We stayed in Riverside apartment. It was very spacious, airy, clean, and very well equipped. The breakfast provisions were quite generous. The situation is ideal for doing the Great Ocean Walk sections around Glenaire - you can walk up to Castle Cove. It's not too far to drive to Cape Otway, Apollo Bay or Johanna. If you must be "connected" then make sure you're with Telstra. We were and we had no problems with reception. A couple of very minor quibbles - the BBQ wouldn't self-ignite so was difficult to use and the TV is too small to see from the lounge chairs.

Bruce was a great host and the Walker's Lodge was more than I had expected--roomy, with a very generous collection of breakfast supplies tucked into the fridge. Bruce's son brews delicious beer which is available for sale. At the national park campground down the road there are koalas, the seashore in this area is stunning, and the valley setting made for a lovely sunrise. It's definitely off the grid--no guest internet and only marginal cell service from Telstra (I was out of luck with Vodafone). If you really can't unlug and aren't on Telstra, it's just a short drive to better reception--but why?

What a great location in the otways, just a couple of hundred metres from a quiet secluded beach. We went fishing, saw waterfalls, had dinner on the beach at the mouth of the river and walked parts of the spectacular great ocean walk. All that is just 1 weekend, we'll definitely have to go back. The accommodation was modern and super clean and the host was very happy to share all his local tips. Definite 5 stars!!!
