Nice boat ride to the Island. As soon as you get there you see 100 of people snorkelling over to broke. Corall reef. The corals are bleached, and broken by the huge amount of people hitting them with fins and stand on them.
A little area us closed of and controlled, if lucky you see a shark or turtle... but do you wanna be a part of this?
It's sad to see that selling trips is more important than preserving the beauty and controlling the number of people going there.
We started out early, 8am, as we were informed the island becomes crowded later. The boat took us across to the island, about 10 mins ride. We were given life jackets to wear. On arriving we were kitted out with masks and snorkels and fins. The bay to the front was marked off with bouys to show where it was safe to snorkel without damaging the coral. We saw a lot of beautiful fish but sadly no turtles. We went over to the bay at the rear, which was by now very crowded. We saw similar fish especially if we swam out but felt we preferred the bay to the front so went back. We stayed till midday and caught the boat back. A really pleasant morning with underwater beauty all around us. If you have aqua shoes, I suggest you wear them as the beach is made up of broken coral which is sharp underfoot. You can leave your back packs at a desk at your own risk. Our’s were ok. Cost including boat 11.000 rupees for 2 of us.
Excellent clarity of water
Great variety of Marine Life
Excellent and Supportive Ground staff
Superb location which is pristine
Only, get your own snorkeling gear if you can
There are two sides to swim on the island. The front side (where the boats drop you off) i think has better coral and sea creatures. We saw a shark which was great. The downside is that's the waves are a bit choppy and not suited to those who arent totally comfortable swimming, or for small children. The back side is much better for those children and others as the waves are not as choppy. I enjoyed this side more as I had a little kid with me and he really enjoyed it.
Paid around 30 usd / person for the boat to the island and the entry fee but I can say that it is really worth visiting the island. Is a really great place for snorkeling, the water is clean and you can see a lot of beautiful, colorful fishes. If you go a bit deeper and get lucky you can see sharks also, no worry there aren’t dangerous. Be prepared as there are no shops, toilets, changing rooms on the island. Most probably there will be lots of tourists, but even so the island is really enjoyable.
