Clive and Laurie were wonderful hosts, nearby when needed, but otherwise left us to enjoy the house to ourselves. The house is lovely. The position is perfect, on the bay with the changing tides, sandbanks, easy swimming for kids, but close enough to good snorkeling, rock-pools and the surf coast on the outside of the peninsula. We'll be back...
Did I say family? Try TWO! Nine of us stayed here, loved every minute of it. The kids can play all day on the safe bay-side beach, with the tides creating a fantasylandscape of sandbars and water features. The open deck and living room and kitchen were perfect for days and evenings hanging around, cooking, eating, relaxing, playing. The plunge pool was a gorgeous oasis surrounded by the perfect gardens, a place to lie in the shade of the milkwood, retreat to the cool waters of the pool. The staff were lovely and kind, and the owners Laurie and Clive were helpful, fun, fascinating, and generous. A short hike around the point of Devil's Gate or over the dunes above and you are in the wild, beautiful, stunning landscape of the Indian Ocean, miles of enormous dunes, huge waves, birds and crabs, just wild, terrific beauty all around. A stroll down the beach to the beach bar and restaurant, and there is a mangrove forest stretching for miles, full of birdlife. We spent four days here and only regretted leaving, not a moment that wasn't a joy. We long to return, and hope that we will. Simply paradise.
The accommodation is more than adequate with a spacious deck and the most stunning views. You will surely spend most of your time relaxing on the deck or lounging around the swimming pool.
A walk to the highest sand dune gives you amazing views of Santa Maria and the Maputo Bay and having a drink watching the sunset over the Maputo skyline is a must (The perfect setting to propose to my now Wife)
Your trip wouldn’t be complete without an excursion into the nearby village to experience the local cuisine, ice cold beers and friendly community.
Activities like snorkelling, collecting pansy shells, walking through the mangroves and solitude beaches, fishing and boating to name a few, will ensure that you are constantly entertained.
A fantastic holiday destination which is well recommended to all and we cannot wait to get back to experience more of the welcoming Mozambican hospitality.
Many thanks Clive and Laurie for allowing us to share your little piece of paradise.

What was great about this accommodation is the accessibility - you can reach by 4x4 through the elephant reserve, or its a short boat trip (1 hour dependent on weather) from Maputo. The Lodge does offer boat transfers.
In contrast to the lodges further down the beach towards the village, when the tide is out Karibu always has water for boats. I loved it that the house is slightly raised lending more privacy to guests, and has the most beautiful views, especially at sunset.
Santa Maria itself is a beautiful place for holidays, still unspoilt, and safe.
Wonderfull retreat the accommodation is stunning and we spent our time sitting on the deck and braai picaha, exploring the wilderness, swimming and surfing. It is the perfect escape for a couple, family or friends that wish to get away from the hustle of life.
