This facility is a destination resort about an hour away from a major town. As such, your choices for outside eating and activities are pretty much limited to taking a vehicle. As such, the eating choices are priced accordingly, ie pretty high. The resort is very large and in the process of completing a major construction project. Eventually the facility will include sections for owned condos, timeshares, and a hotel. Staff and housekeeping is first rate and the hotel has its own beach. Fairly expensive, but we got a good deal. Probably would return if the price was right.

When we booked our trip we specifically inquired as to when construction would be completed. We were relieved to hear it would be done in March of 2018 so we believed our arrival in mid-April would be met with a fully renovated resort experience. The reality is anything but. The hotel is more than 50% under construction with bulldozers at my front door and the patio to the rear. Escape to the pool and you are met with bulldozer noise, screeching power saws and general banging that completely destroys your experience. Have a drink at the bar? Nope that is under construction too. Even checking the website there is no mention of ongoing construction or noise. This was supposed to be a weeklong escape from work and it was nothing but interruptions including the fire alarm going off twice during our stay and telling us to evacuate as well as unending noise throughout the day. This experience was not worth half of what we paid and is in fact a huge fraud for scamming us into coming to a hotel that is not nearly complete. Having been an SPG platinum elite member for eight years I am very disappointed with this hotel and its management. I don't know why there are not more complaints given how incredibly disruptive the noise is at the hotel.

Room Tip: no good room as long as all the heavy construction continues. absolutely no way to escape the noise as it exists across the entire property.

Full disclosure first--we are social members of the Mauna Kea/Hapuna resorts and have been dining at both the hotels for a very long time. We were so thrilled last night when we tried the new restaurant Meridia, which is part of Hapuna's huge renovation, and I have to say it was AWESOME.

We joined another couple (also members) and we all walked away with happy stomachs and rave reviews. It is a nice change to have food options other than island fare---mac-crusted this and poke that. Don't get me wrong, those are great, but after awhile you long for something a little different, and the Meridia's mediterranean menu did not disappoint. And the extensive wine list and options by the glass were impressive. (Just wish they had a French champagne by the glass and not just Proseco or Cava)

I started with Hamachi crudo with pickled onions and peppers. All very fresh and clean tasting. Portion was big and filling. I then had a caprese salad with cherry tomatoes from their own garden and the best burrata I've had on the island.

My husband started with arancini that was full of flavors and he then had the venison sugo on pasta. We were all surprised to hear that the venison is sourced from Lana'i where is is abundant. I didn't know the islands have deer!

We can not wait to go back, but I just wanted to share the news that Hapuna is back and with a restaurant like Meridia, I hope the news spreads fast as it is a great addition to the Kohala Coast dining scene!

We stayed at the Mauna Kea Villas and were permitted use of the Hapuna Prince and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. We spent almost all of our time at the Hapuna Prince, primarily because of their fabulous pool. They have both an adult's only pool and a children's pool. The adult's only pool is beautiful and peaceful lookin over the ocean and spectacular beach. The children's pool is huge, perfect temperature, and all 4 ft deep which makes it fabulous for kids and the adults supervising those kids. Huge refurb as the hotel will be debuting as the Westin soon. Common ares look really nice and spruced up. Hallways to the rooms look a bit tired and in need some work. At the moment there is still construction on one of the guest wings so lots of noise at the pool. Spa is closed and not many restaurant options. Although we really enjoyed the facilities and the beach, we found the staff to be disengaged and impolite, which was really surprising. Staff, particularly at the reception desk, seemed annoyed to have to assist and were generally apathetic.

We didn't stay in the rooms so can't comment. Based on the lobby, those restaurants that were open and the grounds, it is an understated hotel. Not the most luxurious on that part of the island. The villas however are amazing, with private pools and well equipped big houses at a great price.

This was my second stay here. The furniture has been upgraded, but the bed was still extremely comfortable. What was a clothing store on my last strip is now a terrific guest lounge with wi-fi and cultural activities. The hotel's cultural ambassadors are exceptionally good and help make this significantly way than a pretty place to visit.

The pool area is the most obviously changed feature, with the addition of a stylish adults-only pool area, a fish pond, and improvements to the stairs. The volcanic rock prevents any cookie-cutter feel. The adult pool area gets very dark at night, with the lighting more for show than use, but if you're on a romantic trip this may be a plus. Wear flip flops or sandals; the rocks and sand really heat up.

The breakfast is still terrific. They've added some vegetarian food items to the menu, which is nice, although the Naupaka Beach Grill closes for food at 6:30pm, which can feel early depending on the timezone from which you've travelled.

The feral cats are still here, which is nice to see, and the tiny colourful birds that visit the Ikena Landing breakfast area are a delight. There was some wall construction happening during my stay, which involved a large backhoe moving rocks, but I didn't feel like it impaired my enjoyment of the place.

Room Tip: I was on the 8th floor, facing the ocean, and it was nice and quiet.
