We spent 3 nights on Oahu and then 3 nights here. It was our first time to the Big Island and we were so impressed. I didn't want to be in Kona, I didn't want to be Waikoloa, this place was just perfectly private and yet close to amenities. We were ocean-view but not ocean front, which was fine - we had a view over the pool to the ocean, really beautiful. Fish everywhere in little meandering streams throughout the property. We paid extra (I think) for the amazing breakfast buffet, which I highly recommend. It was so yummy and varied and exquisite. Never got tired of that buffet, I only wished I could have stuffed more into my stomach. I booked the hotel and a one-day full tour of the island through Costco travel - that worked out great. I liked that this hotel had a lap pool (at the fitness center) in addition to their other big, lagoon-style pool - we took the complementary bikes each day to the fitness center (there was really no one there - you don't need to work out indoors or in a lap pool with so much natural beauty around you - and the lap pool was pretty dang warm in any case) and we rode up to the little shopping center, too - for shopping, restaurants, and to pickup some little snacks at the grocery store there. Really easy. The resort was just so chill - we ate by the pool several times - they had live music every night - several hot tubs, just not crowded and everyone was lovely. We liked that you could walk a few minutes over to the private snorkeling area, with your complementary snorkel gear - the water and fish were ah-mazing and all of it just so stunning. The ONLY downside for us was the first night we were there - a Saturday night - there was a wedding on the beach - which was lovely, but the reception was out by the pool, which was also fine - but their live band - which was a full, louder band - went until 10pm at least - and when you're on west coast CA time - that's 1am and I couldn't sleep...After the first night things were much quieter, even with the live music at the pool, it was like ukulele music. The 10-hour tour we took around the island was spectacular. However, I would absolutely stay here again. On an island that has so much basalt, the Mauna Lani is an oasis of green and lushness. Not to be missed.
