“Lovely setting & friendly owner”

We have stayed at the Haven three times now and although it may not be the most up market of properties it is very comfortable and in a lovely position. The owner couldn't be more helpful and the property is within walking distance of shops and restaurants. We have booked for 2016.

“A traditional home from home”
Reviewed 11 December 2014 for a stay in November 2014

Stayed for just over a week in Nov/Dec.

Had struggled to find a property with private pool at relative last minute and took a gamble with the Haven.

If you are looking for modern, sleep, plush interior this property is not from you being very traditional in style, furniture and décor, quite obviously the family has previously lived here and there are lots of personal photos and possessions.

However for us we found it extremely homely, an excellent base for exploring the island and somewhere to relax.

Very warm welcome from the owner on arrival despite the kids being excited after cooped up in car/plane/car for many hours.

Very close to small supermarket at the top of the road and whilst close to bus stop we had a car but would be a good base regardless. Well equipped kitchen albeit a little old-fashioned but more than adequate for our needs.

Despite being a little cold we still got the enjoy the pool and the Jacuzzi bubbles in the pool were very much appreciated by our children.

A little tired in places, but nothing to spoil our enjoyment of our holiday.

Great week - thanks!

“very relaxing stay but very old fashioned”
Reviewed 3 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We stayed at the Haven for a week with 5 family members, we were attending a wedding in the resort. We were met at the Haven by Seraphim (or Fino) who was extremely helpful in showing us around the villa and even drove me to the supermarket to buy essentials, he was a lovely man. The villa is very big, it has two sitting rooms, two dining rooms and two very large doubles with an enormous amount of storage which were ensuite, a twin room and bathroom and a self contained flat under the main house which had a double bedroom and bathroom etc. Outside there is a good size pool and a lot of sunbeds which could do with a bit of updating, no umbrellas because the villa is on the top of the hill in the old town of Mellieha and has good views it also means it is very windy and blows umbrellas over, It also can mean that if it is very hot the wind is welcome but when we were there it was sometimes overcast and the wind made it chilly and we didnt get much use out of the pool. The kitchen was very well equipped, we were very lucky that one of our party was Thai and she created themost wonderful dishes (we were very spoiled!) but needed to use a lot of equipment I have never seen a rental place so well equipped with crockery, glasses and cooking equipment.
The one striking thing about the Haven was that it looked as though parents of the owners had died in the 1970's or 80's and it was left exactly as they lived there, nothing had been cleared out it was most bizarre, all the drawers of the many sideboards were full of household stuff and there were loads of old ornaments, dried flower arrangements and bit and pieces which looked like a giant car boot sale. There were lots of lovely old fashioned heavy dark furniture, It didnt really worry us at all because it felt as though we were coming back to a cozy home but I think it is very strange that the owners havent cleared it out as they are renting it as a business.. It did need a lot of updating the cooker had a gas hob just perched on top of an electric oven.
There is a good wi fi connection there. It was close to the old village which was lovely and the supermarkets (2) and a good fish shop and a few nice fruit and veg shops and bakery were all close by, the bus into Valletta and other places was just at the top of the main road.
We had a car and visited a lot of places one of the nicest was Medina, also there an excellant market on a Sunday at the main fishing village there the fish is amazing.
We had a really nice time there and the stuff in the villa didnt worry us but I could see it might not suit everyone.

“Could do better”
Reviewed 9 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

I searched long and hard to find a villa in Malta matching most of the criteria the family had set. In the end I booked this villa many months before the date of travel partly due to the facilities it offered and its location with easy access to a sandy beach. I also took into account the reviews available at the time.

The booking process direct with the owner via e-mail was straight forward and a deposit was sent.

Due to the lateness of our flight and subsequent arrival at the villa at 2am arrangements were made to pick the keys up at a specified location. This worked very well but it did mean muddling our way through the villa in the early hours of the morning.

I suppose one could say the villa is ‘as described’ and ‘seen’ on the website photographs. However what struck us immediately was the peculiarity of the layout and a distinct damp/musty smell. Later that morning, suitably refreshed after a few hours sleep we had a good look around the villa to get our bearings prior to heading off to the nearby supermarket. I can only describe the villa as quirky and of its age. It is by no means of the imagination a modern property. A lot of the fixtures and fittings have a certain period or antique look about them which gives the place a rather dated appearance, having said that I quite like some of the period furniture.

The supermarket, greengrocer, butcher and bakers are no more than a pleasant 5 minutes stroll away. Also close at hand are a number of restaurants and bars. The main shopping street down towards the church is only a 15-20 minute walk.

Returning to the villa one cannot fail to be impressed by its location, set high above the coast line giving lovely views across to Comino and Gozo. It is also noticeable how quiet the immediate area is (building work at adjacent property excepted).

As the week progressed I was able to consider the environment of the villa and how it met with the expectations and did it provide the product as described. I could also consider how I might word a review. It was during the latter part of the week that I revisited the website to see what the most recent visitors had made of the Haven.

In relation to the kitchen it was noticeable how slow the water flowed from the tap, this became more of an issue as a result of the advertised dishwasher having been sent for repair so it was back to hand washing and the need to top up the kitchen sink with water from the boiled kettle. The issue with the tap is highlighted by a previous reviewer yet hadn't been rectified for my visit.

As a self catering holiday the kitchen facilities are pretty good but were let down by the need to clean dirty crockery before use. I was disappointed with the standard of kitchen knives due to not one of them being sharp enough to perform the task they were designed for. A blunt knife is more hazardous to the user than a sharp knife and another issue is the door handle on the oven, it gets so hot to the touch that it is dangerous.

In my opinion this property suffers from an issue with damp and this is re-enforced by the sheer number of plug-in room scenters around the property and a dehumidifier in the basement that I emptied at least five times. The damp could also be the cause of an unpleasant ‘wet dog’ odour in the lounge area adjacent to the front access door. It was also evident that a thorough clean of the property hadn’t been undertaken prior to our arrival. It was so annoying to see the most amazing spider webs between the chair legs of not only the computer chair next to the television but also one of the dining chairs in the kitchen/diner. There were other areas that highlighted the poor cleaning regime including cobwebs and dust in particularly the excessive number of artificial flower arrangements around the villa. They no doubt looked okay when they were new but sadly these are no longer new and now have become serious dust collectors.

Turning next to the exterior of the villa, the pool area is a lovely sun trap with outstanding views and large enough to accommodate 6-8 loungers in comfort. It has to be said however that the towelling covers on the lounger mattresses have seen better days and the plastic mattresses themselves need a good clean.

I understood that the pool had a jacuzzi section to it but we couldn’t find any information to turn that or the pool lights on. Considering it was the end of October the weather for most of the week enabled us to use the pool and the outside eating areas.

I believe reviews should be subjective in the hope that the owners may pick up on any issues and whilst I have highlighted negative elements I believe them to be justifiable. I have rented properties as far away as Australia, Thailand and in numerous locations across Europe. Almost without fail any other property has provided an information booklet with instructions on how to use the equipment/facilities, here there was nothing. It would not be too difficult to provide information about the tv/dvd or satellite box etc or how to turn the pool lights and Jacuzzi on or the fact that the kitchen tap requires cleaning frequently. Simple instructions would alleviate the frustrations of hit and miss, trial and error in trying to fathom things out. A holiday is for relaxing and I for one don’t want to keep contacting an owner to raise issues.

Finally we did have a good time and the contact we had with the owner was pleasant and friendly.
As previous reviewers have said The Haven is in a very good location but the property does need some TLC and for me a proper deep clean. Even with all the quirky aspects to it the villa could provide a great holiday.

“I liked being at the Haven. It was a home from home”
Reviewed 3 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

We arrived and the owner was friendly and showed us everything. We found everything was clean and there was a lot of space. I think it is important to say that this is like a 'home' with all the things that go with that, such as family portraits and ornaments and magazines/books etc. We liked it a lot as it gave us a sense of warmth which so many holiday lets lack. If you want a swish 'hotel look' villa with an impersonal feel then this is not for you. Yes there are a few things that could do with updating, such as the cooker but I can live with that. On the other hand there was was a dishwasher ( and tablets) and a large choice of cooking and eating utensils and a coffee maker. The owner also purchased a welcome pack. Put it this way I would go again. Also the owner was available and helped us with the wi-fi and cleaned the pool and bedlinen/towels etc
