Hurtigruten managed trip - very well organised but in the limited time would have loved more time driving on the snow (a real buzz) and less in the Sami Lavvo (interesting but..) Great taster experience enough to know we wanted to do a proper tour if we get the chance! Friendly team, very safety aware and clearly love what they're doing ❄️

We were travelling in a group tour and Viktor picked us up from our hotel. He made a grand entrance by wearing a 'bulls hat' and that really caught our attention from the start! While on the way to the camp, he gave a short introduction of Kirkenes, and that helped us to appreciate the place better.

Upon arriving at the camp, we were greeted by the team members, and had a short intro of what's to come and to expect. We were then changed into their mittens, overalls, helmets and boots, and was given a brief intro on how to ride the snowmobile. The instructor commanded a lot of attention from us on this area, as it is very important to know how to operate and for safety reasons too.

Thereafter, we rode out across the frozen lake and stopped at a point to fish out the King Crabs and had a photo-taking session with the crabs. We tried to spot the northern lights as it was our last chance to spot before we return to Helsinki, but it didn't appear. Hence, we rode back to the camp.

After changing out, we proceeded to the teepee for our crab buffet and lo and behold, we were alerted that the northern lights were out! We dashed out to view it and it was awesome. As my husband forgot to bring his tripod, one of the guys was kind enough to lead him to a place whereby my husband can place his camera on and to get a good shot. After about 20 mins or so, we went back in to have our King crabs buffet. It was served with bread and wine/tea/coffee/still water, and the crabs were good! Not too salty and it was warm, perfect for such a cold weather!

It's a pity that we didn't get to ride the snowmobile for a long distance. But it was still an awesome experience!

We were met at the Hurtigruten ship and brought out to their dígs. The provided coverall, gloves,a mask...gave ample instructions for us novice folks. Was 10 degrees below zero, but SO dry it was ok (heated handle bars!). Just wish we had more time to do more snowmobiling!! Went in the Sami tent for some talk & coffee. Would love to do King crab safari!!!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Couldn't have given a better description than those before me so I'll just proceed with the pluses and minuses.
Plus:
.No fuss for equipment as everything needed for the safari is provided
.Friendly n knowledgeable people running the show
.Clear safety briefing before we set off on the snow mobiles
.Unbeatable feeling when out there, on the frozen waters amongst the fjords
.Meaty crabs for dinner
Minus:
.Drive/Ride on snow mobile too short. It ended just when we were getting the hang of it.
.Can be messy when eating the crabs. Clothings can get splattered with the broth the crab was cooked in when removing the shell to extricate the
flesh. But I guess it is all part of the fun!
.There's only 1 toilet. Washing your hands before n after the meal and going to the toilet can become, well, difficult if there's a big group

The guide Ulf was a jolly chap. After a short drive to the venue and kitted up in warm coveralls and snow boots and mittens. We are given a short safety brief on how to operate the Skid doos. We were given ample encouragement to drive safe but have fun. This we did. To be fair the excursion, which was pre paid when we booked the cruise and it was not cheap, could have lasted a bit longer and more time spent on the snow mobiles rather than warming up in the Sami Tent. But that was us. Great experience as you`ll never get to do this in the UK.
