The hotel has an old fashioned feel too it, which is not a criticism as it's an antidote to some modern hotels.

Check-in was friendly and efficient, one quirk is the hotel like you to pay the day before you plan to depart.

There is a lift and the room was a reasonable size.

There was an automatic sensor operating the bathroom light which was energy efficient but if you sit still too long on the toilet or linger in the shower there is a danger of being plunged into darkness if you're not careful.

The comfort of the beds is somewhat subjective - although obviously new I found the mattress far too soft for my liking, whereas my wife found it comfortable.

There is a cafe bar outside which serves light snacks and the breakfast offering was comprehensive.

There is a free private car park to the rear and the hotel is in close walking distance to the railway station and the town centre.

The town centre has a disproportionate number of restaurants for the size of the town and the problem is not finding somewhere to eat but actually deciding where to eat.

This was our second time staying in this lovely hotel. It is a family run hotel and everybody is very friendly and helpful. The food and service for dinner is outstanding. We experienced a buffet dinner the evening we arrived which was excellent. It is very near the train station and also only a short walk from the lovely town centre. I would highly recommend this hotel and we hope to return again next year.
Thanks to everybody for a lovely time.

Does look outdated but is clean/tidy and friendly. The bonuses were the location for the city centre which is brilliant, and the fact that parking was F.O.C so didn't impact on the cost of the room. As we were there over the Easter period there was a nice gesture on Sunday of a little egg on our plates at breakfast.

I spent three nights in this old hotel, which, despite the outdated look, is comfortable and kept in a good state of efficiency and run intelligently (and with courtesy) by its staff. The room chosen (a superior) was very spacious and endowed with a large renovated bathroom. Generous and acceptable the morning breakfast. A good place to stay for excursions to Aachen and Maastricht, besides peaceful Valkenburg.

Room Tip: a superior room i s a good choice

No chain, "flat-pack" hotel this, but a warm family-owned hostelry, with its hospitality as sparkling as its brilliant Christmas decorations. The family welcomed our coachful of visitors as though they were personal friends - and made of point of waving us off when we left. Small touches, but they make all the difference to the hotel experience -.forget the Hiltons and Holiday Inns.
Our room was clean, warm and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom was roomy and the water from the shower plentiful and hot. Pity about the non-fitting plug in the washbasin ... why does this so often happen in hotels?
The first dinner I would rate as "average", the second better and the third - braised steak - excellent. When I joked that I could eat another one - another one promptly appeared!
The service was good and polite. Dinner was even served early one evening so that we could go to the town's Christmas parade. Breakfast was good and Continental.
We travelled for the three-day trip by Mott Holidays, formerly Crusader Holidays. The star of their show was our driver, Sam, who battled through atrocious weather and traffic conditions to get us safely to the hotel, and arranged for us to miss the two-hour-plus queue to get into the underground local Christmas market. This was disappointing. But a trip through the adjacent quarried caves was well worthwhile.
We visited the German mountain town of Monschau for their Christmas market. This was a fairytale place, glistening with snow in the sunshine. The market was much better than Valkenburg's and the smell of food on the stalls made our mouths water. So did the steaming glasses of Gluhwein.
This was, indeed, all a Christmas treat. I advise travellers to follow in our footsteps.
