An interesting place to visit with ships frequently moving from the Canal to the River and visa versa. Also the possibility to get on a Restaurant Boat for a trip which is fun and relaxing.
Close by a small shop for refreshments and nice walks.
It is very nice to do this water course and to change your orientation using the ancient technology discovered by the Greeks and perfected many years later by Pascal.
A must visit for tourists. Three large passenger boats with on board café and bar plus an old restored paddle boat steamer ply their trade here. The boat lock is quite big and in everyday use. The Mitt land kana (Midland canal) crosses over the river Weser here. The river goes to Bremen and is very popular with cyclists who spend a cycling holiday travelling along it's path to that city . The canal eventually runs to Berlin, and is popular with small pleasure boats.
An unusual attraction - a working lock which allows ships (well, European barges) to cross between the Mitteland ('Midland') Canal and the River Weser. It brings them up some (or down) a rise 13m in less than 10 minutes. Although built 100 years ago the engineering is an amazing feat by today's standards. Less than a Euro gets visitors right onto the lock and provides access to the excellent visitor centre nearby. An additional attraction is the new, bigger (much much bigger) lock being built along side it - see the model of the new one on the quayside of the old one. Well worth an hour of anyone's time if they happen to be passing near to Minden. There are boat trips which may be taken nearby which include passage through the lock - wish I had had time to do it.
