My partner and I use trip advisor regularly, Hotel Juliani looked lovely and as it was rated number 1 on trip advisor we were easily convinced. the hotel offered a beat the credit crunch deal which included a hop on hop off bus ticket for us both and a three course dinner in their restaurant Zest,

When we checked in my partner asked if we had been allocated a quiet non smoking room (we made this request on booking). our room turned out to be very small and not quiet (!) we spent the first night listening to a screaming baby in the 'adjoining' room, and the room was clearly a smokers room. the receptionist response to this was to come and spray the room with an air freshner and tell us that this was the only room on offer as the hotel was fully booked. we asked the night porter the same question and he showed us another room but at that stage we decided to stay in the room until the following day.

the next morning, after only 2 hours sleep I spoke with another receptionist who said she would try to move us......she was far more helpful and sympathetic and she moved us to a lovely quiet room.

breakfast in the hotel was very good, there was a good choice, and the coffee was excellent!

we dined in the hotels resturant Barracuda which was good, we ended up dining there two nights as the Zest restaurant was closed the night we wanted to utilise our free menu but the hotel accomdated us at barracuda.

all in all this hotel is OK.....the staff are hit and miss, with some providing 5* service, others not so.....

would I stay there again.....no.......

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and have a deluxe room with a sea view

Hotel Juliani is well situated overlooking Spinola Bay. It is a very busy stretch of road and crossing it demands a degree of confidence, nerve and luck. It is very handy for the regular buses into Valletta and to pick up the 'hop on hop off' buses.

From the outside the hotel really doesn't look much but as soon as you walk into the entrance lobby you realise that this is an establishment of some quality. There is plenty of seating here and an excellent cafe/bar s available.

Our room was a fair size and well equipped with flat screen TV, safe, air conditioning, hair dryer etc. No tea/coffee making facilities but the hotel will provide a kettle if requested. Free hi speed WiFi is available. The bed was comfortable and the room and bathroom kept spotlessly clean.

The downside from our point of view was the lack of an outside window. The large glass window looked out onto a small space surrounded by other rooms and having only a small square of natural light beaming down from the open area above. Although this is mentioned in the Hotel blurb we hadn't spotted it when we booked and it came as a disappointment when we arrived. We found it somewhat unsettling not to be able to see out and the only way we could tell what the weather was doing was by going downstairs into reception. The same room with an outside view would get a full 5 stars - unfortunately 3 is the maximum we could give it and were it not for the otherwise excellent service and facilities it would have been less.

With one exception the staff were excellent; helpful, friendly - charming in fact. The exception we faced upon arrival when the woman at the desk simply told us to sit down and she would sort out our room - this was at 1.00pm following a very early start and a tiring journey. In the end and after considerable questioning my wife managed to extract the fact that the room wouldn't be available until 3.00pm. Fortunately the representative called by and he managed to get us into the room by 2.30. The receptionist concerned rates zero for communication and helpfulness. She could have done so much better. In the end I haven't reduced my overall rating on this account because it would not be fair on the other staff who were fantastic. I am not going to name the individual who let her colleagues down so badly but if she gets to read this she will know who she is.

The breakfast in the Hotel was first class. Bags of choice and of a high standard. We ate twice in the Zest Restaurant. It's a little pricey but superb food; well presented and served by professionals.

Lots of things to see and do nearby and a must is a trip to Gozo. Try to avoid the arranged tours though. We went on a tour arranged with our representative with a firm called SMS. It was expensive, included a trip to a factory shop and a tourist market. Not enough time to see some of the more interesting sights and the lunch was, frankly, laughably poor. I know it can be difficult to get to the ferry on your own although we didn't make too many enquiries so it may be easier that our rep made out. The 'hop on hop off buses' do represent good value although the nort route can be covered easily and cheaply using the regular bus service. Definitely visit Mdina and Rabat which can be reached directly from St Julian's. Buses costs 2.60 Euro for a day's travel - what value!.

Overall we had a great holiday and in almost all respects loved the hotel. It was just the lack of daylight that spoilt it for us. If you don't mind perpetual nocturnality or if you can get a room with some sort of a view then I have no problem highly recommending this hotel to you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an outside window

This is one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in. It is clean and well decorated in a modern and minimal way with a light blue, white and dark grey colour scheme throughout, giving a very peaceful and calm feeling once inside. Outside there are a couple of tables just off the busy street where you can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is a nice pool and sun terrace on the roof with complimentary towels. The staff are very professional but helpful and friendly as well. There is a good choice on the breakfast menu including full English, continental and cakes. Illy coffee is made fresh to order and tastes wonderful. The restaurant on the first floor, Zest, is well worth a visit and not too expensive in comparison to other good restaurants in the area. Our room was at the back overlooking a quiet street with a small unfurnished balcony off the bedroom and another balcony in the bathroom! There was a safe in the room and a mini bar. The larger rooms on the front of the hotel with a balcony and view of Spinola Bay are the best. We would certainly stay in this hotel again, it is perfectly located in a beautiful bay with fantastic views and excellent transport links on the doorstep.

Room Tip: Best rooms are the ones on the front overlooking Spinola Bay.

This was one of the best hotels that we have stayed in,anywhere..All of the staff from the cleaners to the management were very pleasant, helpful and informed..The general decor very modern and relaxing, the rooms spacious and confortable. The breakfasts in the cafe catered for all tastes and the food fresh and constantly replentished. We started with 4 nights in a deluxe double, which was very quiet and obviously properly insulated, and obtained an upgrade to a seaview for 3 nights when it became available..We were delighted that we actually had been given an Ambassador suite which is every bit as good as the hotel pictures show it to be..The views from the balcony were wonderful, showing the bay and Malta life in action..Recommend with absolute confidence...

Room Tip: Get a seaview room if available.Great for people watching. The non seaview rooms are spacious,confort...
