Unlike much New Caledonian beachside accommodation, Hotel Evasion is located up in the hills, in a riverside setting.

The bungalows (which bore an unfortunate resemblance to municipal toilet blocks!) were spread along one side of the river, surrounded by tall trees. They were well fitted-out, each having a spacious terrace facing the river. Inside, the décor was older in style than most places, while a good selection of visitor guides was an unusual inclusion.

In less welcome aspects, the shower was old-style over the bath (not easily accessible for some), while the former mounting for the flat screen TV (now on the table) was still clearly visible on the wall. It wouldn’t take much effort to tidy up things like that.

Breakfast was served in the small restaurant and terrace alongside the swimming pool. While the selection was smaller than at buffet breakfasts elsewhere, it proved sufficient. The drip coffee was a nice change from the machines prevalent in most other hotels.

We didn’t eat at the hotel restaurant, going out to La Corne du Cerf in Farino for dinner, and to Chez Mamie (also in Farino) for lunch the following day (both highly recommended).

The Trou Feuillet rock pool is a 10 minute walk up the other bank of the river and seemed very popular with those who had arrived in their swimming gear. If you happen to be in the area on the 3rd Sunday of the month (as we were), don’t miss the morning market located by the town hall in Farino.

We only had one night here, but would happily stay again.

Booked at short notice. A little difficult to find but well worth it.Off the beaten track. It helps if you have speak a bit of French as no one spoke English but we got by. Great little cabins clean air con, roomy with comfortable bed and huge bath! We loved the restaurant and authentic French cuisine but the owner needs to employ more than one waitress at busy times. Recommended. Well worth getting out of the tourist trap of Noumea and hiring a car to drive here it is about 1 1/2 hours.

Room Tip: Choose a room near the restaurant during rainy weather or get wet

We stayed two nights at Hotel Evasion at Sarramea, and it was completely different from the beach resorts we had stayed at in other parts of the country. It is set in a beautful valley alongside a mountain stream, and the bungalows are surrounded by magnificent trees and tropical plants. There are only 10 bungalows. Ours had a king size bed, a desk, armchairs, and a large terrace with chairs and coffee table overlooking the river. The decor is not modern - the furniture is traditional dark timber with beautiful carvings, which was a change from the usual tropical modern settings elsewhere. The bathroom has a very large deep bath, with a shower over, which is difficult if you have limited mobility, but the bathroom was very clean and well maintained.
The restaurant, called The Rock (in English) served some of the best food we had in NC, with a well chosen a la carte menu, and a selection of excellent French wines. It was expensive - $A190 for two courses and a mid priced bottle of wine for two people. At those prices, we only ate there one night, and drove down to La Foa the second day, where we bought picnic food at a supermarket and also at the town market, which was on that day. Breakfast was continental style, and everything was made in house, including little glass pots of yoghurt, and excellent local coffee in a drip pot, not the usual coffee machine with acid old beans we were offered elswhere.
There is much to see and do in the area, and I would recommend it as a peaceful change from the beach resorts.

Room Tip: All the bungalows front onto the river

We only had one night booked at hotel evasion but wished we had more time to spend here. This place is so quiet, peaceful and relaxing, located in a beautiful bushland area nestled in a valley. Quite different to anything else we experienced in New Caledonia. Staff were very helpful and friendly and spoke very good English. Our bungalow was very private and quite lovely. We enjoyed dinner at the restaurant experiencing great service and fabulous food. If you are looking for somewhere away from it all.....this is the place to go.

Room Tip: I don't think you could go wrong with any of the bungalows however we had No.3 which was lovely.

Note this review is for lunch at the hotel restaurant only. We were travelling round the island, so based on other reviews diverted here for lunch and lucky we did. It was a Monday so very quiet - we were one of only 2 tables occupied. The meals were still of a high standard and we could not fault them. Service was impeccable. The Hotel Evasion is somewhat out-of-the-way but well worth the diversion.
