Location fine, didn't expect much out of season. Were told on arrival that the heated towel rail wasn't working, advised to leave bathroom door open to keep room warm. Also found whirlpool bath also not working. We couldn't find any local information with local amenities, nearest doctor etc.also no instruction books for utilities except TV's.told by a chap working in mill they have had a lot of trouble with heating, on our second day heating and hot water failed. We were eventually moved to another lodge that evening, again no information in this lodge, but did have heating. As I booked this holiday as a birthday present for my brother in law,and as a result felt very embarrassed.
The Red Squirrel lodge is a wonder little haven to escape to. It's peaceful, and out of sight, with Peahens and Peacocks walking freely around the grounds, and decking, peering in on the rooms! Parking is ample (and free). It was a delightful stay.
Where this property loses a star is in the misselling of some of it's facilities/amenities. It states internet access - but this is only available from the cafe inside the Water Mill attraction next door. Being out of season, the Water Mill itself was not open on any of the days we were there - so no internet access (The welcome book gives two different wifi passwords too, one clearly out of date).
The welcome book also invites you to visit the Water Mill grounds after closing time, and to even use the rowing boats on the stream. Again, being out of season, all boats had been removed from the water. Something we were looking forward to, but let down.
The property also states within its welcome book, that there is coal for the BBQ/logs for wood burner supplied. There were neither on the property when we arrived. Upon texting the owner, we were told they'd run out (could we have been informed beforehand?). The owner said she would drop some logs off in two days time - she never did, nor were we contacted to say why. Poor care of customers, which makes a big difference. The images of the log burner roaring was one of the main selling points for us. The coal and logs were an extra cost onto us, and our holiday.
These little things add up, but stating them here is not to slight the wonderful property, but to hopefully improve it, if the owner(s) take note.
