Best Vacation Spot Ever
My wife and I took our family (son, daughter, their spouses and our 15 month old granddaughter) to Grand Cayman to escape the brutal Ohio winter in mid-January. Based on all the online reviews we read about Ocean Paradise, this complex seemed the perfect location for us. While promoted as a home with a pool, overlooking the ocean, it is so much more.
First of all, Grand Cayman is the closest I’ve come to being in Shangri-La; incredible beaches, easy to get around, plenty to do if you want to be in the touristy areas, but lots of space to go and enjoy the quiet solitude of this island paradise. The locals are friendly and not once were we solicited for our spare change or to purchase anything from street vendors…because there aren’t any. In short this little country really knows how to cater to tourists. We felt at home from the minute we arrived, in fact, before the plane even touched down, as I was looking out the window, I was already planning my return trip.
While I was a bit apprehensive about driving on the left side of the road it didn’t take long to get the hang of it. I did have everyone in the van keeping their eyes open to make sure I negotiated the roundabouts properly, remembering always to look “right” first and last. The local Budget rental location arranged for a brand new mini-van that accommodated all seven of us along with our luggage. We made sure to get an automatic (fortunately the gas and brake pedals are in the same location on the floor as in the US, the trickiest part of driving was remembering that the levers for the turn signal and wipers are reversed, meaning that the windshield became very clean the first few days each time I made a turn!
Ocean Paradise is just that…an incredible spot on the quiet north end of the island, an easy 40 minute drive from the airport. This complex has five newer, well maintained homes that surround a lovely pool just steps from the ocean. We stayed in the yellow house right on the water front. The adult to grandchild ratio of 6:1 was ideal for our daughter to get a well-deserved break from providing the constant attention that an infant requires.
The home comes fully equipped with everything you need to enjoy yourself for a week including a washer/dryer so no need to pack lots of clothes. Essentially, you could just show up with your bathing suit and a tooth brush and you’d have everything you’d need for a week.
Sean Scott the property manager couldn’t have been easier to work with and it felt like his staff (just a phone call away) were on call 24/7 if we needed something.
While folks did go in the ocean and snorkel in front of our home, the beach there is rocky and not conducive for long walks. We spent our afternoons at Rum Point, a wonderful complex with plenty of chairs, hammocks and a shallow wading area for children. Red Sail sports rented us wave runners and snorkeling equipment and their excursion to Sting Ray City (must see) left from that location. We enjoyed lunch at Rum Point the days we were there. Not sure anything tastes better than enjoying a grouper sandwich with a local beer on a picnic table overlooking the ocean.
We went out to dinner several evenings and had great meals and experiences at all of the restaurants on the North Side of the Island. We particularly enjoyed the Kaibo Beach Bar and their Upstairs Restaurant where the proprietor took a special interest in us and gave us an extensive education on rum with plenty of samples from the Rum Bar. We also had great dining experiences at Tukka, Bombay Chopsticks, Over the Edge and at the Sunshine Grill (a great breakfast spot in Seven Mile Beach area).
In summary, our trip to Grand Cayman, couldn’t have been any better and the Ocean Paradise was a big part of what made this the Best Vacation Spot Ever!

“Beautiful, well maintained, beach front home - but a long way from West Bay”
Reviewed 3 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

Home was great - well stocked, great condition and nicely appointed. We stayed in the green unit directly on the beach and the views were spectacular. The beach was a bit disappointing with lots of rocks and sea urchins, along with a stiff north wind and a lot of seaweed. If you want some place off the beaten path and aren't looking for snorkeling directly outside your door, these are definitely worth considering. We had a mix of divers and non-divers so it worked out OK - just a long 45 minute drive to West Bay to get out of the wind and enjoy some of the spectacular diving.
