Parts of the walk around the gardens are pretty steep but once you get to the playground on the rise of the hill it is really worth it. The playground is suitable for all age children and safe. The rest of the Botanics is an interesting outting, pack a picnic or ride the cable car too and from and have a look around the views. There is some themed gardens and the usual fountains and native bushes.

If you are a nature person you will love this place. You must be ready for a long walk when you visit this place. Wide varieties of roses, succulents, grasses and trees. You can also ride a cable car to enjoy the top view of the city.

The gardens are magnificent. I took the cable car to the top & then wandered around the gardens. The gardens are situated on the side & top of the hill so not good for those who cannot walk far. The beautiful rose garden is situated at the bottom of the gardens. Unfortunately they were not out when i visited. Lovely cafe at the Rose garden. You have to be reasonably fit to walk around all the gardens or take it slow. Entry free. Lovely views from the top of the gardens.

The Botanic Gardens are reached by a steep walk or a tram ride up to the top of the hill where the Observatory is to be found along with the Tram Exibition. It is good to take a one way ticket, enjoy the views over the city of Wellington at the top then stroll back down into the city. The different parts of the gardens which you will pass through will engage your senses, the trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, cacti etc look wonderful and in places smell wonderful too. There is an active garden area to delight children and the glasshouses and rose gardens around the fountain are not to be missed. The gardens are free but the price of the tram to the top is worth it.
