We were very surprised when we found out that we had been upgraded to a beautiful suite. This stay was for one night only but was for a significant family occasion. We booked treatments in the spa followed by dinner in the restaurant that evening. The General Manager made a point of coming over to make sure that we were enjoying our stay. There were lots of little touches made by the staff both in the restaurant and during our stay. The suite was just beautiful and such a lovely surprise. The hotel is a lovely combination of old and new, and the spa, swimming pool are modern with beautiful views overlooking the grounds of the hotel. We really like this hotel, it's quiet, and the grounds are beautiful. If you like golf, the course looks impressive even though I have little interest in the game. This hotel is a special place, not somewhere you would go for a two week holiday, but certainly somewhere you could come to celebrate a significant date / event. It's just lovely and certainly very special.

Room Tip: Also hotel lodges for self catering option

Stayed in the self-catering lodges here. These are very good, but it is the hotel that really makes the experience. The pool is first class, with open vista on to the terrace gardens. The hotel's public rooms are luxurious without being off-putting and the staff thoughout are very welcoming and friendly. The estate grounds are lovely, whether you want to walk or cycle round on the hotel's own classic Electra bikes - just borrow them from the front of the hotel, take them for a spin and return them when you are finished! A fantastic retreat buried away in the south of Ireland. Only one word of warning - being a 5* hotel, the food is expensive and I would highly recommend a visit instead to Pat Shortt's pub in the village. The food is excellent, and they pour one of the best pints of Guinness I have tasted!

"This is magnificent, it has greatly exceeded my expectations" - not my words, I overheard a holiday journalist telling this to a member of the staff. She said it slowly as if in a daze, while pausing in the middle of the impressive Georgian (1710) ballroom which is the main lounge. We couldn't disagree.
The main part of the hotel is a Georgian mansion set in front of a huge rolling Irish meadow with grazing horses flanked by large meandering river. Adjoining is a spooky ruined 16th century castle and on the other side a blending contemporary wing, containing an excellent spa/pool with all facilities. Initial impressions are jawdropping, and the standards of the hotel and especially the service maintain that standard. The service is very attentive and at times intimate without ever being intrusive or obsequious. We arrived at a very busy time - "Mothers Day" also a wedding, I wound down my car window to ask someone in the throng where to park when out of the blue "George" appeared to welcome us in the manner of a long lost relative , whisked us straight to reception and parked the car.
Nearly all the staff seem to be practised conversationalists - can this be part of their employment criteria? For example, I expressed an interest in the majestic rococo ceiling of the lounge and the waiter (Gunther) gave a discourse on late versus early baroque styles!! There were numerous other examples from other members of staff. In all the service and sincere pleasantry was so relaxing it was nearly an affront to subsequently engage with anybody out in the real world!!
The rooms were excellent, and eating good and not expensive by local standards.

I can very highly recommend this hotel, or rather "experience".

We had a fabulous stay here. Everything was perfect from check in to departure. The hotel is stunning, the rooms are beautiful, spacious, luxurious decor, large bathrooms. We had a Junior Suite for 2 adults and 2 children and there was plenty of room. The spa was definitely worth a visit. The swimming pool was great fun for the kids(9 and 7) and they spent ages in the Zone. Great gym, lovely walking trails. We golfed one afternoon and used the bikes another morning. The food in the Bell Tower and the bar was wonderful. Wonderful place for a relaxing, luxurious weekend. Can't recommend it highly enough.
