As a big fan of Collins it was great to visit and stand where he was born.
It's fairly well signposted and although not a lot there it felt special to spend some time visiting.
We were lucky to have the place to ourselves and took some time to reflect on how someone from such humble beginnings could rise to such best heights.

I remember being at the opening of the Birthplace of Michael Collins in 1990 I think it was. The place is always in a good state of repair and neat but it’s a pity about the graffiti on the stones in the interior of the old house. It didn’t mean much to the kids (4&7) but I recreated the photos I had from 1990 with them next to the bronze head of Michael Collins. They loved it and they want to visit again but il leave it a couple of years when they can appreciate it.
It’s amazingly peaceful to stroll around and take in the location and to imagine if the stones here could speak, they would have something worth listening to!!!

When you visit Woodfield you.ll find it a solemn place in an idyllic location. As a young boy Michael would walk to his school in Lissavard and often climb the hill of Knockfeen opposite Woodfield. From such humble beginnings its hard to believe that at only thirty one he was negotiating the treaty with Lloyd-George, Winston Churchill and Lord Birkenhead. Amazing achievement but so sad he had to die at the hands of his own countrymen

As his actual birthplace was destroyed this does not take a long time to get round. However, the information boards are good and it is a peaceful place in this day and age.
