“Another happy stay!”
Reviewed 12 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

This was my second time at Jewel Cottage - it has become my go-to place when working in the area; Bakewell Show this time. Once again a little oasis. Very quiet, very comfortable. Each time I find there have been improvements and additions. Martin makes sure that he listens to his guests' feedback and acts on it if he possibly can. And "The Carols" keep the place absolutely spotless. I really can't fault it and have booked again for September! Thanks again Martin.

Thank you for the wonderful review - just so other guests know we do offer one night stays but only when they fall between longer stay bookings as its normally two night minimum stays throughout the year from April to October and all weekends. Martin & The Carols.

“Relaxing and comfortable cottage, a home away from home”

We had a wonderful 4 night stay in the cottage. The service we received was excellent and it couldn’t have been more welcoming. The property was extremely well appointed, the internet was fast and the beds very comfortable. The extra TV and videos in one of the bedrooms was an extra luxury, especially after a long day out. For our needs the location of the property was excellent. A visit to the nearby Chatsworth House is a must and only just down the road. We spent a day just around the town relaxing and it was a lovely town to walk around with an interesting and large antique shop by the river. Loved the fact that the cottage had everything we needed.

“Lovely little cottage for our wedding night”
Reviewed 22 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We stayed here as we got married across the road at County Hall. It was ideal for us as it was literally over the road, so gave us a place to stay the night before, after setting up the hall, and the perfect place to get ready before the wedding and stay after. No taxi's or transport needed! After getting ready me, my dad and my bridesmaids were able to walk across the road and be at the venue. I'd recommend it for anyone getting married at or attending a wedding at County Hall.

It was a lovely little cottage, very cosy, with everything you need. The owner had kindly left us a card, a bottle of red wine, a bottle of prosecco and 2 bottles of peroni. It was very clean. The owner also sent us a guide to the area, that would be very handy for holiday makers.

The location is ideal for exploring Matlock and Matlock Bath, but due to being on a very steep hill, not ideal for walking into Matlock and back if you're not very fit or having difficulty walking.

My only negatives were the noise from the bar next door, going on late into Friday night, and the uncomfortable mattress on the double bed in the upstairs bedroom. We didn't try the mattress in the downstairs bedroom, so can't comment on that. I had a terrible night's sleep the night before the wedding, due to the noise and the uncomfortable bed. So the next night, we put the duvet from the bottom bed on top of the mattress and slept on top of that to make it softer. A mattress topper would be an easy way to solve the issue.

Thank you for your review - there is now a mattress topper on the bed - its strange but normally people have said how much they like this mattress - Its only a year old, as for the hill, well people come to The Peak District for "Peaks" and that is what Matlock is all about. So happy the wedding went well . Designate at the Gate is only open on a Friday Evening and it being Summer the windows would have been open. Sorry about that. Martin
