“Can't beat the view, but be aware of the shortcomings!”

After a somewhat rocky start (blocked drainage in bathroom sink, some of the windows could not be locked) we managed to have a fairly decent stay in the Waves apartment at Oceans 14, given that the issues were effectively dealt with the following day. The overall standard of the apartment is rather basic...for instance there are no shelves for clothes (only two cupboards for hanging clothes) and the cooker is terribly basic and not very comfortable to cook with. The kitchen is not well stocked; only tea & coffee, sugar and salt await the guests. So it is mandatory to arrive with your own food, condiments, oil, spices etc. The same goes for the bathroom where no shampoo or shower gel is provided. Also no hairdryer is provided!!!The guest manual is kept to a bare minimum and does not even contain a reference to the nearest grocery store. Given the free WIFI this is perhaps not such a big deal. I did notice mold in several spots in the bathroom and the presence of c. 25 pigeons (I did count them!) outside the bathroom and corridor windows was not very appealing. The futon sofa was not comfortable at all which made it hard to fully relax in the evening. Guests should be aware that there is no dishwasher in the apartment and that the washing machine and dryer are shared with the other guests which makes it at times challenging to gain access to it! The lack of a balcony is somewhat disappointing as this is standard for all units in the neighbouring houses. As a matter of fact, Oceans 14 comes across as a bit of an "ugly duckling" (on the outside, not inside) compared to the other rather newer houses in the street. Given the age of the house one probably needs to be a bit concerned about the state of the pipes so we did not drink any of the tap water. Also visitors should be alerted to the fact that the house next to Oceans 14 just got torn down and that there is noise from ongoing demolition (and soon construction) work. Despite the rather long list of "minuses" the view from the main window onto the waves of the Atlantic is nothing short of spectacular and compensates for many of the aforementioned shortcomings. Other positives: The shower is pleasantly modern and convenient, so is the central heating. The double-bed is very nice, good quality mattress and nice duvet ensure a good night's sleep. WIFI was down once during our stay but thanks to the great responsiveness of the owner it was up and running again the same day. Given the poor mobile reception I was getting (even on Vodafone there is no signal in most parts of the apartment), the provided WIFI is an important lifeline here! Overall, this is a decent holiday apartment in a top location with breathtaking views, as long as you are foregiving to the somewhat long list of shortcomings.

Management Response

We’re slightly confused by this review as we’ve never suggested that this apartment has a balcony or dishwasher and like all self-catering apartments we don’t provide food or a full range of toiletries but we do have basics like salt/pepper and tea/coffee and hand soap. There is a hairdryer in the communal laundry and I always send very detailed emails to our guests with directions and recommendations for the best supermarkets and restaurants in our area. We do have beautiful new build apartments next to us but they are very expensive to rent and have exactly the same pigeon visitors that we do – the council is currently dealing with that issue. Our building was re-plumbed and re-wired 3 years ago so there are no problems with water quality. We made lots of changes for this guest in the run up to their stay as they changed their minds and travel plans. We bent over backwards to respond to their complaints, which became more ‘interesting’ as the week went on. We did our very best as we always do for all our guests but in the end we had to accept that there are some people who will still never be pleased. We respectfully suggest that if you want to stay in a 5 star hotel style apartment then you need to book and pay for that level of accommodation as our clean, friendly and beautifully positioned self-catering apartments are probably not for you.

“great value, great location”
Reviewed 24 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Highly recommend this stay....Mairead was very helpful and responsive. She was even thoughtful enough to mail us my husband's fitbit that we lost in the apartment! The apartment was exactly as pictured and described. It was located directly at the beach and afforded some very lovely views. We walked to our meals as it was very nicely located within the town. It is also very convenient to many attractions around the area. We will definitely stay again. Thanks, Mairead!

Had a great stay at the Waves apartment. Apartment was bright and modern and overlooked the beautiful views of the ocean, kids enjoyed rock pool fishing whilst I was able to watch from the apartment. Literally a 2 minute walk to the promenade. Would definitely return and would also recommend.
