“Great location and very cozy and comfortable cottage”
Reviewed 26 February 2016 for a stay in February 2016

The welcome at the cottage was second to none though we were almost 2 hours later than we thought and the owners had to wait around for us. They were very friendly and gave us all the basic information we needed. The cottage was extremely comfortable. The heating was very efficient so it always felt and cozy despite the freezing temperatures outside. The cottage had absolutely every amenity required. The CD/iPod player with a selection of CDs was a nice touch. Things like the dishwasher and washer were a boon to make life easier when on holiday. Great too that there was a supply of washing and dishwashing tabs. Could not fault anything. The endless very favourable comments in the visitors record book are testament that others were of a similar view and that lots of them have made numerous visits. The location, we thought was brilliant. A short drive into Bakewell or Matlock. Lovely walks right from the cottage. We also loved the traditional pub. Very friendly almostphere and they welcomed children. We went there several evenings to sit by the fire and play games. Great to be away from the hustle and bustle of life. All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. If I was being very picky then perhaps an open fire or a wood burning stove would have made it a score of 10 rather than a 9.5.

“Wonderful cottage in tranquil village - perfect place to relax”
Reviewed 4 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Such a lovely cottage - equipped with everything you could think of. The owners Hazel and Ralph were so kind and considerate - left us a fab welcome basket with wine, eggs, bread and butter. The cottage is situated only 3 miles away from Bakewell and so although no local shop there is a big co-op only 5 mins away. We will defiantly be returning. Made our Christmas.

“Cozy Cottage BUT needs better cleaning practises”

Pros:
Very cozy and comfortable little cottage
Villlage was small, quiet, good location with buses to surrounding villages (although stopped at 5-6pm)
Very helpful and friendly neighbours
Owner friendly and generously picked us up at nearby Bakewell and drove us to cottage at beginning of stay

Cons:
At first glance the cottage appeared clean but when you took a closer look it was very dirty. The LR and DR were clean and dusted but the kitchen and bathroom definitely were not cleaned after the last renter and most likely for quite some time. There were cobwebs and dust so thick you could write your name on it on pictures, even above the stove. All the stove knobs, light switches, plugs ins, walls in doorways, etc had heavy black, grimy fingerprints. There were food splashes on the kitchen tiles, appliances, etc as well as thick greasy dust. The bathroom shower tile had a very thick layer of grim and the tub had thick layers of dirt, a number of rings and hair in it. We washed the tile and tub with an SOS pad 4x to get it clean, thoroughly washed the entire kitchen cooking area.
We also were told very specifically by owners, as well as seeing it written on a directions sheet, that you were to leave the bedding on the beds upon departure. Due to the circumstances we felt we should clean the bedding as well.
Also the mattresses are old, in particular the 2 single beds and should be replaced
Perhaps the owners should make it a standard practise to throughly clean between each rental. We did not feel comfortable using the bathroom, cooking and even sleeping in the beds until we had cleaned everything ourselves.
Also wanted to mention that the pub in the village only serves light lunches. There is not a general store in the village, just a few varied items at pub. You would need to go to other villages to grocery shop.
Even having said this, it was a fabulous little cottage and would go back there again, but just be prepared to do some initial cleaning.

Management Response

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are extremely disappointed to read that the cleanliness of the cottage did not meet your standards and that this in any way affected your stay. It is very important to us that all of our guests have a relaxing and enjoyable visit and we always do our utmost to ensure this happens. We will review all of your points and address any issues we feel necessary, however please be assured that the cottage was definitely cleaned after the previous guests. We take all of our guest comments seriously, however we were very surprised by the nature of yours. We have been welcoming guests to the cottage for over 25 years and have never received a negative comment about the cleanliness of the cottage during that time. In fact, we have only ever received positive feedback and just a few days before your stay we had a site visit from the agency Area Manager who had also complimented us on the cleanliness. It is unfortunate that you did not contact us at the start of your stay to notify us of your dissatisfaction, as we would have happily come and discussed things with you and put things right as you felt necessary. We pride ourselves on giving people a very personal service and the assurance that they can contact us at any time during their visit so that we can help make their stay more comfortable. We will ensure that future guests are more fully aware of this. Inspite of this, we are very grateful that you gave us a 4 star rating and that you appreciated the extra lengths both we and the neighbours went to to make you feel at home and a valued guest and we are pleased that you would still be happy to return to the cottage.

“Wonderful and cosy cottage, excellent stay, great hosts”
Reviewed 15 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015

The cottage was welcoming, beautiful and cozy. The house was filled with all the things we needed cooking wise and basic necessities were provided example soaps and other toiletries. Ralph even prepared a welcome basket filled with goodies, stocked up the cottage with eggs, bread and milk! We roamed the Peak District daily so we didn't use the TV much, mostly just the Wifi, which worked alright actually, surprisingly not bad for the countryside. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. Peak District was just serene and full of beauty. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, Bakewell, Matlock and Matlock Bath were within comfortable driving distances. We hoped to come back to the cottage again.

“very fine cottage”
Reviewed 6 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

A delightful cottage, set in a beautiful village. Bakewell, Matlock, Monsel trail, Tideswell and a host of other delightful villages near by, with Chatsworth, the ' Jewel in the crown ' only minutes away. We enjoyed it all. Hosts were lovely, with welcoming basket, a very nice touch.
Thank you
