This is a great place to stop for a look around if your a train buff. I personally have stopped here many times and found the crew very helpful and able to answer any questions you may have. They are always looking for volunteers. I have always stopped here when someone is there and leave the wife to shop down the road while you spend a hour or so having a look at the heritage of New Zealand Railway history.

With five little boys and their parents, we boarded the Kapiti Family Express steam train.
It was only about an hour's journey between Paraparaumu and Paekakariki and back again. But the boys thought it was wonderful; hearing the train hoot, seeing the smoke and steam belching out from the loco and chugging along at a slow, rattly pace was a new experience for them all.
Seasoned, elderly guards were extremely friendly, helpful and fun.
It was something for all to remember.

The Paekakaraki Museum is very interesting to visit and the staff are very keen to show the steam locomotives to visitors and to explain their histories and operations and to talk about the regular excursion trains that are operated on the NZ main line.

We took a steam train day trip to woodville. What a fabulous experience. Great views of course but something special being able to ride in a restored carriage, ours dating back to 1917. A short stopover in shannon wasnt long enough, but this was all about the train. The ride through the gorge was spectacular.
It was a long day but really enjoyable. The staff were mostly volunteers and very enthusiastic which was lovely. Totally recommend this outing.

If you love travelling by train this is a great experience. By travelling by a steam engine and in carriages dating back to 1936 we had a wonderful experience travelling through the lower North Island stopping off to get "rewattered" and photo opportunities. We travelled over 3 viaducts - a real feat of engineering.
