The Gite was recommended by a friend and was well sited for visiting the beautiful town of Saintes and the Charente especially the riverside villages of Taillebourg and Port d'Envaux within 2 miles to the north. Booking was commenced by telephone and the owners are fluent in English, German and French.
On arrival my wife and I were met by Andrew Haine who lives with his wife and family in the Manoir Ecureuil, the Gite being in the grounds. There was a bottle of wine, already chilled, waiting for us together with essential basics so as to avoid an immediate shopping trip. The Gite is furnished in typical French style and well appointed, especially the kitchen. English tv and wi-fi worked well.
As our visit was in June, we had no use for the wood burner or other heating but welcomed the coolness of the Gite after enjoying the warm sunshine. Outside, we had our own sitting area for outdoor eating and sunbathing, but could also enjoy the family swimming pool with raised decking and plentiful loungers and shades. We were encouraged to walk around the grounds of the Manoir but chose not to explore the tree house or slide, leaving that for our grandchildren when they visit. Level walks leading to the river. are accessible direct from the Gite. Access by car is easy into Saintes (10 mins) and very good restaurants are to be found there and in the local villages. Many historical sites are within a 6 mile radius and access to the coast at Royan or La Rochelle may be achieved within 45 mins.
