“Absolutely superb in every respect, welcoming and friendly, comfortable and cosy.”
Reviewed 30 April 2015 for a stay in October 2014

I stayed here last October with my family for my sixtieth birthday and we used the whole site. Julie and Andy couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. Andy chopped the firewood and showed the men how to light the fires (yes, very definately sexist!) in the gites while Julie was at hand when we needed small amounts of various culinary ingredients and she told us about the markets and where to source the best fresh produce.for our celebration meals. They had a ready supply of outdoor and indoor games which we made full use of and there was plenty of space in the large garden for children to play and the grown-ups to sit and relax with a glass of wine without any danger of being hit by a football or shuttlecock! The views from the gites are spectacular and provide a calming and restful air of tranquility. There are several picturesque walks that can be taken from the gites which we enjoyed, and some of the children and adults borrowed bicycles for a ride around the paths and lanes. i would go there again and would recommend it to my friends and family.

“Perfect French gite with a pool!”
Reviewed 17 April 2015 for a stay in August 2014

We stayed in mid-August 2014 – our third stay in Coquelicot, our favourite gite, in our favourite area of rural south west France.

We discovered L’Oustal du Viaur, in the tiny hamlet of Teillet, on the border of the Tarn and the Averyon, some years ago when visiting ex-pat friends who now live near Villefranche de Rouergue.

L’Oustal has been owned, renovated, permanently lived in and run by the Butters family (English ex-pats) for the past ten years. It comprises three gites – Bleuet, Coquelicot and Tournesol - which share the three key benefits of L’Outsal:
- incredible views across the gorge of the Viaur river,
- total peace and quiet,
- a fabulous pool.

The main photo on the website shows all three, but does not do them justice ( http://www.tarn-aveyron-gites.com/ ).

We always stay in our favourite gite, Coquelicot: ( http://www.tarn-aveyron-gites.com/coquelicot )

Coquelicot is the oldest building on the site - a stone farmhouse, nestled between the smaller gite by the entrance, Tournesol, and the large, converted barn which is the Butters’ on-site home.

Coquelicot sleeps six – we were selfishly just two during our third stay last August, but then we think it is the best of the three gites and well worth the extra expense.

Coquelicot comprises three bedrooms and two bathrooms on three floors. The top floor is a high ceilinged loft, converted in to a large, light, airy master bedroom with two south facing velux windows, a very comfy iron framed bed and a delightful, modern en-suite bathroom – with a large, self-standing bath. TIP: Do beware the very low beam in the doorway of the master bedroom – you WILL bump your head, at least once!

The middle floor comprises a lounge, the second double bedroom and a south facing balcony – we only used the balcony during our most recent stay. There is a log burner in the lounge, and we’d love to return ‘out of season’ to try it one day. The TV is connected to a digital English TV service, but we didn’t use it – preferring to spend every evening drinking Galliac (Tarn) wine on the gite’s patio, or with the residents of the other gites (usually English or Dutch).

On the ground floor is the large, cool kitchen (no windows on three sides) with a large farmhouse-style kitchen table. A large gas-fired range cooker, a tall fridge/freezer, a microwave and, best of all, a dishwasher. (There’s a site-shared washing machine and tumble drier in a small barn next door.) Plenty of glasses, dishes, etc and even plastic ware for children and picnic use, are provided. It is a pleasure to cook and eat in this kitchen, although we lived on local wine, bread, cheese and salad. There is a large pile of local maps and leaflets to study.

Next to the kitchen is a dark, but wonderfully cool, twin bedroom and a useful shower room with plenty of hot water, at a decent pressure, all the time.

Free wi-fi is provided throughout L’Oustal and the gites although I often found the 3G faster ( I was amazed how widely you get 3G in rural SW France now ).

By the front door in to the kitchen is a sheltered patio, with outdoor stairs up to the balcony and lounge. A large garden table, seating for six and a large parasol. Sunny in the morning - shaded in late afternoon. Perfect for al-fresco dining in the evening.

The Butters are so welcoming, knowledgeable, friendly, but unobtrusive owners – more like our long-lost friends these days. They supply basic materials such as cling film, aluminium foil, herbs and spices, dishwasher tablets, loo rolls, kitchen roll, etc. They also provide a much appreciated free Welcome Pack of milk, butter, eggs, French bread and a bottle of quality Galliac red wine.

Over and above all of this is the simple, peaceful, quiet, hamlet rural location (you have to drive to anything), the lovely countryside views and the fabulous large pool with plenty of loungers and parasols. The swallows dipping in the pool are an amazing sight. I think the location and the pool would be truly hard to beat!

TIPS:
We grocery shopped in either Carrefour at Baraqueville (near Rodez), or the new, very large E.Leclerc at Albi next to the N88, or else at the small Intermarche in Naucelle.
Naucelle (15 mins up the N88 towards Rodez) also has a tasty boulangerie.

TRIPS OUT:
Albi - the departmental capital of the Tarn and a superb place to visit.
Cordes-sur-Ciel - a ‘must’ to visit, north of Albi. An ancient citadel. Park in the lower town, have a drink / coffee in the square and then hop on the road train up the medieval town… and walk back down the cobbled hill.
Sauveterre-de-Rouergue - the local bastide town. Drive up the N88 towards Rodez and then through Naucelle. Classic central square with covered arches. Our favourite place to visit, wander, eat, drink and relax.
Villefranche de Rouergue – we also like wandering, eating and drinking here, too.
Toulouse - capital of the Midi-Pyrenees, a 90 minute drive from Teillet. A cosmopolitan city. Worth visiting if you want to shop or if, like last August, the weather is unusually not good enough to stay by the pool at L’Oustal every day… but personally I’d rather visit the other places above.

The Gaillac wine region, just to the south of Cordes, is an absolute must – but, unless you’re a real wine buff, just buy your Gaillac in the E.Leclerc in Albi.

All in all, we can’t wait to return to L’Oustal and Coquelicot for a fourth holiday..!

“Lovely gites with gorgeous views”
Reviewed 23 February 2015 for a stay in August 2013

A super place for a family holiday - we've stayed on three separate occasions! Julie and Andy are on site so it's great for getting info quickly. Very quiet area and you really feel you're experiencing the real France. A great base too for exploring the local area - boat trips in Rodez and amazing towns like Cords sur Ciel and Sauveterre. Highly recommended!
