We have offered an average score for this holday rental property as there were a few minor failings that didn't come up to a standard that should of made our stay perfect.
Firstly, there should be huge warnings about the dirt track that leads up to the property. The warning should state that the track is NOT suitable for low axle vehicles and only suitable for 4 wheel drive. Anyone with back or leg disabilities be warned that the track experience can be extremely painful and bruising due to the pumps and knocks received during the drive up to the property.
I am dissabled and have some problems with walking. We discussed my needs and made the agent aware of my dssablities prior to booking. However, we would advise that changes to the cottage description and search fields be made to Trip Advisor's advertisement of this property. They state that the property is suitable for wheelchairs and provides Wi-Fi which is not a true search criteria and would be misleading if booking on line and without checking with the property agent first.
Upon arrival to the cottage, we were met by our very friendly and helpful host. Sadly, we were not greeted with a hospitality pack in the cottage. It would of been a nice touch to be provided with a welcome pack to at least be able to make a cup of tea or coffee. There was also no guest book or information about the area or where to find the local shops and reccommended pubs. These little touches would of made the welcome experience more pleasurable. On the whole we found the cottage to be clean but a bit tired and in need of some inexpensive TLC. The soft/hard furnishings and provided towels/linen were clean but well used - only 2 small guest towels and one hand towel provided. We had to roll up the floor mat as we found it a bit of a trip hazard. The modern 'wet room' bathroom could benefit a bit of re-grouting. The sponge mop provided to dry the wet floor after a shower was inadequate and needed to be replaced. There were no cleaning products or vacuum cleaner available to keep the cottage clean and tidy (free from doggy hair) during our stay. Also, we would advise that the crockery be checked prior to new guests arriving as we found some of the pots and pans had not been cleaned properly and still had used fat and grease in them. The glassware had not been rinsed after use and were coated with greasy washing up product.
Such a shame we have had to provide an average review. The cottage retreat could definitely benefit from some simple upgrades and changes. Providing a simple hospitality pack shows that the guest is welcomed and made to feel valued.
Apart from these negative niggles, the positives were the pretty garden, the peace and quiet and the friendly, helpful host.
A little off the beaten track. Family run, by a friendly couple. Plenty of short walks, including to the local pub. The bathroom sink requires needs attention, plug not holding water. Very quiet, peaceful place though.
Tidy enough place, a bit off the beaten track. Couple of issues the bathroom sink didn't hold water. Poor seal on plug hole, and the tin opener was useless. Owners are friendly and helpful.

We enjoyed our stay at Shilbury immensely. Although a little off the beaten track, it's a spacious and comfortable cottage with excellent facilities.
We will be sure to return next year.
