Hotel Ixtla is located on a fairly busy road in the town of Ixtlahuaca de Rayon. It is conveniently located for the university and the industrial park. There is car parking under the hotel and if you stay in the motel part at the back you get a personal garage under the suite.
This is a fairly basic hotel by standards of most business hotels and a very stylish one by the standards of cheap hotels... The public areas are limited to the restaurant area and the seating in reception. There is no separate bar, no gym, no internet PC area etc. The public areas are all clean and well maintained.
The restaurant serves all meals (which are also available by room service). It also serves as a bar if you want to have a sit and drink. The staff are generally friendly and helpful. Note that very little English is spoken in the area and in the hotel either. We found we needed our local colleagues to translate most of the time or we used Google Translate on our smartphones to communicate. A couple of the guys in the restaurant speak some English and were really good guys trying to help out :-)
The food in the restaurant is good and inexpensive. There is one English language menu and that doesn't seem to have half as much stuff in it as the Spanish one does. Another good reason to learn Spanish before coming to Mexico....
The rooms in the hotel are spacious, comfortable, clean, well maintained and have a funky decor which is great. They are not ideally laid out for the business traveller as there is no provision for working at a desk in many rooms. Also not much power outlets to charge laptops and phones with. There is Wi-Fi which I had no problem using although coworkers who had rooms in the back of the motel said they had no signal there.
The hotel also let us use the function / party room for business meetings during the day and did not charge extra for this.
Another good thing is the hotel provides a really good range of consumables like toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, razor, shaving cream - which is great as I always forget at least one of these items on any trip.
My only concerns with this hotel is that it was quite noisy. There seemed to be construction work taking place in a neighbouring room during the night on several nights and the night we arrived there was a huge, loud, party going on in the land behind the hotel which was VERY loud until about 4:30 AM or so.
On the other nights I had a great sleep so it could be just a question of luck...
For the price you cannot beat it. Nice hotel, nice people, good food.
