We were so lucky wth the weather! Hats off to those hardy souls who do this in the winter. We are not so hardy - I have three girls 10 -15 who consider getting sand on their beach towel a terrible injustice - and at first I feared my family were going to string me up when we arrived. But the sun shone and the pancakes worked out just fine and they didn't notice the tiny spider outside their hut or the wee little snake that crossed our path on the way to the toilet. I would recommend taking some snacks as the stores are quite basic. And at one point there were no cups (I was forced to drink my red wine out of cereal bowl! The humanity!). We hadn't booked any of the experiences and they book out early. But we did book canoes when we arrived and had a magical day on the lake. We rowed to the little beach and swam there which was lovely. We booked the sauna in advance and did that in the afternoon - jumping into the lake to wash ourselves afterwards. Invigorating! And like I said, we were lucky with the sunshine and blue skies.
We only stayed two nights and for us soft city people that was our limit. There is only so much sleep we could eke out on those thin mattresses. But it was worth it. My kids chopped wood, lit a fire in their hut, slept by candlelight, rowed a canoe, leapt from sauna to lake. In the end my girls loved it.

A small hut in the forest will provide the accomodation for the night, you will have to make your own fire to stay warm and to cook your food. But if you want to experience some wildlife in great swedish forests, this is a great place to stay. A sauna on a raft in the nearby lake is the closest thing to luxury at this hostel, but it still one of the best vacations ever.

Gorgeous stay in a charcoal hut - really enjoyed chopping own wood, building fires for cooking, compost loos, spring water supply etc.! Sauna is also a must.

Attended with two friends on the Bushcraft course where we learnt shelter building, lighting, water purification and foraging skills. Andreas was a very informative and welcoming host.

Kolarbyn would also be great just for a stay without a course or activity.

Kolarbyn is located about 3km from Skinnskatteberg, but feel a lot further away from anything than that! Staying in a small hut with no more than two beds and a fireplace really brings you in touch with the surroundings.
When staying here, you make your own fires to cook on, you get your drinking water from the stream running along side the camp. Everything done here is done by hand and tests your skills.
The floating sauna is great too! A couple of hours sitting in there is relaxing and knowing you're the one that made the fire heating it up making it all the more satisfying. For those who don't mind cold water, a jump in the lake afterwards is worth it!
Canoeing on the lake is a great way to spend an afternoon too! The still water mean's it's possible for even the most inexperienced waterman to enjoy the experience.
The whole area is just so peaceful! And there are plenty of walks to go on and views to find!
For anyone looking for an escape from life for a few days, this is the perfect place to stay!

Best place to relax and enjoy for a weekend. Would recommend this for all nature people. Dont forget to bring your sleeping bag and maybe some snacks. Kolarbyn is a memory I will cherish for a very long time.
