We occupied two, two-roomed apartments in the Dorint, both of which had wonderful views. The first, privately-owned on the ground floor and slightly, but not unpleasantly simple in its finish, was generously equipped with local information/maps/recommendations and extras - herbs, oils etc. - for preparation of meals (n.b. in both cases two rings and a microwave), and accessed a shared lawned area immediately outside so that we could vary our sitting positions according to the light and scenery - also good for children? The sole disadvantage was the bed (140cms) pushed right up to a window so that we could wake to views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau but had to climb over each other for nocturnal toilet breaks. Would better suit children if the adults slept on perfectly adequate sofas in the generous living area. We decided to sleep separately!
The second apartment, owned by the hotel, was higher up in the main building and much better presented, although the absence of the 'home' supplies of the first made it impractical to do much more than prepare breakfast and microwave meals (shops in village). The views from its balcony were far-reaching and absolutely superb.
Both apartments provided us with privacy and the ability to avoid rather over-crowded dining rooms while allowing us to benefit from the hotel's excellent swimming and sauna facilities - cooling down from the latter on their terrace with the aforesaid mountains turning pink in the sunset was a wonderful experience. Dinner was a mixture of our own meals prepared in the apartments' small kitchens, or was taken next door at the Gloria hotel with its first class cuisine and its terrace offering us an even better view of mountain sunsets than we had from the sauna terrace. Both the tourist office and the Hotel Gloria owners (a Swiss/Australian couple) were excellent sources of information, and Herr Koenig, in charge of the hotel, was extremely helpful.
Beatenberg, above Lake Thun, is within easy reach of the area's great tourist draws but is also equipped with gondola lifts upwards plus a mountain railway down to the lake, and has it's own fine and varied walks and outstanding views.
