Your visit to Helgoland is incomplete without making a visit to the Düne Island 15 minutes away from Helgoland by boat. There are boats leaving from the harbour every half hour from 9.00am to 5.00pm for the Düne & tickets are priced at 5 Euros a head. After 5.00pm the frequency of the boats dwindle to every hour on the hour till 9.00pm or 10.00pm being the last one back to Helgoland.

There is hardly any sign of anyone living on the Düne! There is a cluster of pretty, colourful cottages which look like holiday homes & on this visit we did see a couple of families with children going into these cottages.

The island itself is very small & you can walk almost all around it in two hours! Depending on the weather & sunshine you can see hundreds of seals basking in the sun on the shore, close to the waters edge. There are sign boards requesting people to keep a distance of at least 30mts from the seals. The lady at the reception of our hotel informed us that on that particular day all the seals were on the Southern shore of the island. The soft fine white sands, the blue water & the antics of the seals keep you mesmerised.

Remember to take your cameras along & also jackets & scarfs because the cold winds can be cruel! There are a couple of restaurants on the North & South shore where you can sit & relax or hire their beach boxes & bask in the sun.

Encounters with seals on the island Dune was amazing. We were there at time when little seals was born. It is necessary to maintain calm and to respect their space

cute guys, a little smelly and very lazy! Don't go closer than 30 metres, they prefer the south beach on Düne
