The ruins are totally secondary to the view. You can see forever up and down the Rhine. Take the train or walk, either way you will be rewarded. The walk is strenuous!

Head up the hills on the mountain railway or walk up if you're feeling energetic. Take in the beautiful views across the Rhine Valley and across to Bonn. Don't miss the ruins at the very top and stop for refreshment in the smart modern cafe.

We had a great trip with the whole family up there. The younger people hiked (about 30min up) and the older ones were able to take the cable car, which was quite convenient and not too expensive either.
There is a restaurant up there and beautiful views over Koenigswinter and the Rhine.

There is only one negative thing I have to mention: it is bad for handicap and elderly people. There are barely any benches up there. Yes you can sit on the stairs, but they are in the blazing sun, which is especially bad in the summer. Considering they have a train going up there, they should also provide more seating for people with wheelchairs and elderly.

Great views. Good value. Nostalgic train and a nice walk down took about an hour for the walk. It was a bit steep but I only had sensible sandles on. We took the dog which they charged 1 euro for. You can get the train half way back. As for walking up...... if you like exercise and sweat give it a go!

You can either walk, appropriately 30 mins up and 20 minutes down, or take the train, which is what we did, stopping half way to visit the very pretty Drachenburg castle before jumping back into the train which takes you to the ruin at the top. Here there are the most fantastic views of the Rhine and then you can sit inside or out and enjoy a spot of lunch or as we did a cooking bier.
The journey from bottom to top is under five minutes, with a charge of €5 each way and € 5 entry fee to the castle.
Visit on. Week day when parking is easier, there is a large car park under the rail line.
