The Hapimag in Braunlage is a very pleasant hotel ideal for families (and pensioners :-). The hotel is located in the outskirts of Braunlage, a small and somewhat touristic town situated in the south eastern part of the central Harz region, approximately 10 km from the famous witch mountain “Brocken” and near many of the most see Harz attractions which include mining and stalactite caves, mountain walks, spa wellness and the children favorite downhill monster roller (at Wurmberg mountain).
The hotel area includes a basic children’s play ground and a play house with table tennis and pool table. From the hotel ground there is access to “downtown” Braunlage and to the neighboring recreational park.
Apartment (447) had two floors with a two single bed room and toilet upstairs and entrance, bathroom, master bedroom, living room with kitchen en suite downstairs. The apartment was very spacious and clean, however the furniture is somewhat worn. The kitchen was well equipped and functional. There was a large balcony with view of the hotel grounds and the park.
The main building included an indoor 10 x 5 m. pool and large sauna section with several different saunas for free use for the hotel guests. Please note that the German sauna culture dictates complete nudity and men and women in the same sauna. Reception staff was quite automatic in their approach to guests. Not welcoming, but not rude.
The restaurant was among the most popular in the town and booking for dinner was an absolute necessity as it was full every evening. Food was well prepared, but basic and monotonous – like the rest of the restaurants in the area. Sauces were definitely not homemade. The staff in the restaurant was kind and there was a combined kids menu and drawing materials for the kids placed on the table.
There are many families with smaller kids at the hotel and many pensioners – some who visibly did not enjoy the many kids around and most who did.
The walks in the region are various, nicely marked and scenic without being breathtaking. The peak of the trip for us was the downhill monster roller from the top of Wurmberg mountain. The lift station and roller rental is located centrally in Braunlage. Kids must be age 10 to drive on their own, but it is easy (and fun) to drive two on one roller. This is a family must do in the non-winter period!
We enjoyed our four days in Harz, Braunlage and Hapimag.
