On our recent trip around Germany (sept 2016), we made a visit to Neuschwanstein castle. With such beautiful surroundings and wonderful blue sky's we had a great day and really enjoyed the area. Down side is, not much of the castle is open to the public, so the audio tour is only 30 mins long and they shuffle you through like sheep in a sheep dip. But the audio tour is informative and full of facts with some good clear information, available in many languages including English, German and Japanese.

Even though this is not really an ancient castle, it is simply beautifully designed and constructed. We had not planned to visit Bavaria, but we ended up near the border, so thought we'd look in. To visit the inside of the castle, you need to book ahead a couple of days in advance, which we could not do. No matter really, as the highlight of this castle are the views of it from the outside. There's plenty of paid parking at Hohenschwangau. We wanted to view the castle from Marienbrucke (Mary's Bridge). We got the shuttle bus up to the bridge and walked back down. The bridge was fully open and quite quiet, as we didn't get there until about 16:00, which was perfect. The late afternoon light was delightful. After viewing the castle from the bridge, we walked down to the castle. You can walk around the outside and into the courtyard of the castle for fee. a must see in Bavaria.

We booked a bus tour through our hotel in Munich, and I would highly recommend this. When we showed up, the bus driver immediately gave us our castle tour tickets and told us what specific time to be at the castle entrance. I noticed the line to buy tickets was very long, so I'm glad we didn't have to wait in that line!!
We ended up paying for the horse carriage ride to the top, and it is definitely worth the money. It was so relaxing to ride in the carriage while watching many other people sweat and struggle to climb the long hill. We walked down the hill afterwards which was fairly easy.
The castle itself is beautiful, and the tour was informative. But the views of the countryside from the castle were absolutely spectacular, take lots of pictures!!
If you are going to be in Bavaria, you should definitely take the time to see this castle!!

This place needs no introduction at all. We went around 4pm by bus from Fussen to avoid the crowds yet it was still busy. We had already decided not to go inside based on others' experiences yet there was still plenty to see.
The walk up to the castle is perfectly manageable. The road is paved and smooth the whole way. I felt a little sorry for the horses dragging tourists up the hill in carriages on such a hot afternoon, they looked very weary.
Even without a ticket, you are able to explore around the exterior of the castle and even inside the main gate. There are many viewpoints for photo ops, although the main one at the Marienbruk was closed on our visit.
If you plan to visit later in the day by public transport, be aware that the services become less frequent in the evening and can be very busy as a result.

An amazing castle with beautiful views of the surrounding town! We took the bus from the town centre that was a fair price and didn't take long at all! The only thing we was disappointed with was the fact that the tour is very short and you don't get to see much of the castle, only 15 out of the 80 rooms are actually completed and you get to see around 10 of them, you are not aloud to take any photos of the inside of the castle, The only room that we both thought was interesting was the song room, other than that you are better off not paying for the tour and just visiting for the views!
