“Great castle”
Reviewed 26 January 2012

My highlight of this is to get to the castles. We decided to parked and then Hike up to the castle which was really great, surrounding by nature. When we get to the castle is was quite nice and we stop for an ice cream after our hike.

“Pretty impressive and informative”
Reviewed 13 January 2012

Being in Wernigerode you can hardly miss the castle. If you look from any open place to the south it presides over the town. You can go up by a small "train" also horse drawn waggons are available but you can also have a nice walk through the mediavel town and a beautifil prak up (20 mins with some steep parts).
The Castle once was used to defend this area but already in the 30 year war it was outdated in a military way. In the late 19th century it underwent a great renovation and was used in a representative way for a nobllemen of prussia. In the 90s of the last centuries it was renovated again and transformed into a museum. With 6 € entrance fee it is not too expensive. It is still in the shape of the mediavel castle with a very nice courtyard, impressive walls and nice views all over since it was decorated biig time from the outside.

There are two tours which show you most of the interior and there are lots of explanations about the history of the castle and the owners of it and hoow life was at their time. The indoor is very impressive and often made us speechless for a minute or two. Be aware the indoor requires the ability to walk steps and there is nothing interactive in the information. As a bonus you get wonderful views over the surrounding landscape from the windows. Tours by the hour are offered.

We did spend nearly tweo hours there, fully worth the time.

“Interesting Castle”
Reviewed 13 December 2011

Wernigerode Castle recides over the city. You are not able to miss it. You may take the Bimmelbahn (city-train) from main street, or best walk. It is a 15-20 min uphill walk at first trough narrow streets and further trough the park. The museum are very interesting. After the visit you may dine at one of the restaurants.

“A great castle visit for a 1/2 day”
Reviewed 18 February 2010

We visited here in February during a weekend in Wernigerode. The castle is a scenic 10 minute ride from the Altstadt. You can walk, take a horse wagon, a bus, or a tourist tram to the castle. The castle sits on a hill and dominates the view from the city below. You can even stay at apartments at the castle if you wish. There is a nice tour, in two parts, with an audio guide, and takes about 90 minutes to go through. A stroll around the grounds and lunch and this is a great 1/2 day event. The castle is a mix of original renovated works. We thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it.
