The furnace is located in one of the defensive bastions next to the one which provides entry to the fort. Dating back to the mid twentieth century and was probably the first of its kind in the world. Sunlight is collected and focused through a system of mirrors to concentrate it for various uses.

It is especially relevant in this era of pollution and global warming and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

This attraction is essentially a home-made solar furnace, where they use solely the power of the sun, focused through mirrors to fire pottery, burn wood (demo) and melt metal, achieving 3000 degrees C as temperatures.

As a feat, this is pretty impressive. The guided tour was French only and as such a little limiting and did go on a bit, but it was nevertheless very interesting.

The trip starts with a short video explaining the site and the activities. We were then taken outside, the main attraction is a large wall of mirrors which track the sun and reflect its light onto a large curve mirror which in turn focuses this onto a very powerful beam. We had various demonstrations (in French - it did not matter to me as the key was to see the demonstrations) including being shown the power of the sun with a smaller scale mirror which made wood smolder and then catch fire, also a small oven heated just by the sun. The most amazing demonstration was with the main mirror, which included a plank of wood bursting into brilliant flame as it was passed through the beam. We also saw large plates of metal which had been melted with the beam but for me the most amazing was the hole burned through a piece of slate where the slate had melted! If you are in the area it is well worth a visit as there are very few places in the world where you can experience this.

We were lucky enough to come across this whilst visiting Mont Louis and only had 5 minutes to wait until the next guided tour. The film although in French was easy to understand and we were given cards with english explaination. The guide was very enthusiatic and informative. The force of the sun and mirrors is just amazing. It was just brilliant to see the sun burning wood within a couple of seconds. Well worth a visit.

Took the young children to the Four Solaire Du Monde as I anticipated they would be impressed, and can happily report that it DIDN'T fail to please. The Village itself is the World Heritage site so that alone is enough to pull you there and the Fortification etc is quite interesting .
The oddest thing was finding the entrance to the Site of the Mirror/Furnace itself as is hidden (at least to me) inside the souvenir shop ! We shopped in it got out and went to Tourist Office asking for it and even that with the English kind of speaking guy explaining still took another asking from this other office nearby to tell us 'have to go through the shop' and of course purchase the ticket there too! My little son's French is fluent so he had no problem soaking up all the knowledge pouring out of this very pleasant French Girl. Luckily I had it all but my little girl was a bit lost as all was in French of course ! However she did understand enough to volunteer to perform the wood burning experiment by the Solar Heat and they were all impressed. Over all very inspiring for kids to visit and the Furnace is amazing. The verdict from my kids were ''This was a very nice and useful day out daddy'' so there you go !
