“Great. But must enjoy foie gras.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2011

Sarlat is a great little bustling town in which to base yourself if you are visiting the Dordogne area. Market days are Wednesday and the larger regional market on Saturday. It spreads itself throughout the old town and sells everything from handbags to local fresh produce. There is an amazing selection of foie gras but you do get a bit tired of seeing the stuff and eating it in the many restaurants throughout the town. If you want a bit of a break from it all, Les Jardins d"Harmonie and La Couleuvrine in town and Le Chateau de Saint Genies 10 km from Sarlat ( as well as O'Moulin just outside town), provide excellent food with a better range than the in town tourist traps.
Le Port Vitrac is the spot to hire canoes that you can paddle downstream to La Rocque Gageac ( for lunch) before meandering on to Beynac and handing over the canoe for the bus ride back to Vitrac. It's well worth the time and a very easy paddle. No experience necessary. You will pass through some stunning scenery and on a sunny day it's quite a memorable experience. There are places up and down the river for picnics or a swim if you are there summertime.
There are plenty of places for holiday rental both in and around Sarlat. In town accommodation tends to be 'town house' style with no garden or terrace. Outside the town a little you will probably find larger houses with gardens and pools, probably better suited for families with young children but you will need a car for trips to the town for meals if you fancy a night out.
It's an interesting area. However, it grows enormously in the height of the tourist season and it may be wise to go off season if you can. The weather should still be good and you avoid the crowds.

“You must go at least once! A vast market within the Old Town of Sarlat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2011

This is an experienced not to be missed at any time of the year. Unless your a local, it is certainly something you must do once in your time in the Dordogne region. The market starts early and is packed up by 3pm. The market sells everything you can imagine with the majority of the street vendors stall displayed beautifully. Ample local parking outside the main tourist season. Highly recommend.

“Wonderful market with lots of great items...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2011

Great day spent here. Very large with a lot of different things to purchase. Love walnuts and they had quite a few items worth purchasing. Oils, candies and cakes made with walnuts. Frois Grais is a big thing there and I am sure it is good if this is something you like. Worth a day visit from wherever you are staying!
