“Brilliant little apartment, in a beautiful un-spoilt part of Italy.”
Reviewed 4 October 2011 for a stay in August 2011

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa La Rocca. Stuart and Hilary were the perfect host's. They have an extensive knowledge of the area and pointed us in the direction of supermarkets, restaurants, and places to visit. The apartment is well kited out with everything you need, including picnic blanket, cool box, parasols and re-usable shopping bags. We enjoyed doing 4 walks from the book Stuart has written of the area (we would never have known these places existed without it!) and thoroughly recommend it. Our Italian is non existent and Stuart kindly rang up and booked various activities for us which we wouldn't have been able to do other wise. The holiday was a great success and we will definitely be returning.

“A TRUE ITALIAN EXPERIENCE”
Reviewed 3 October 2011 for a stay in September 2011

My husband and I enjoyed 12 days in Hil. and Stuart's apartment. It is situated in a quiet valley overlooked by beautiful mountains only 10 minutes from the old town of Sulmona. We had a very relaxed holiday alternating rest days strolling around the local ancient hilltop villages with days spent doing five hillwalks in the surrounding National Parks as described in Stuart's just published "Walking In Abruzzo" guide book by Cicerone. Hil and Stuart were always available with helpful advice on where to go and what to do,they even escorted us on a spectacular walk in the Val Di Rose where we saw chamois and heard and saw the majestic rutting red deer stag. Hil hosted a "Pizza Evening" baking delcious homemade pizza in her beautiful outdoor pizza oven, washed down with their own organic Montepulciano d' Abruzzo house wine under the stars! We climbed the Corno Grande all 810 meters of it and were rewarded with a view of the Calderone Glacier near the summit (another of Stuart's recommended walks).Stuart's guide book is an absolute must for anyone interested in walking in Abruzzo, it is the only one in English and all the walks are well described , graded and an accurate walking time given for each one. Casa La Rocca is centrally located for walking in all of the National Parks. The apartment is well equipped including extras like a cool box ,beach parasols and access to Hil. and Stuarts extensive DVD film collection.I watched "The American"(George Clooney) filmed locally in Castel Del Monte and Sulmona ! Hil.kindly stocked fridge with essentials including her own tomatoes and figs prior to our arrival + a bottle of the house Montepulciano.A short distance away is the ancient town of Sulmona which has a beautiful square and old district but also has a good range of shops and an excellent market. Our favourite hilltop village Pettorano Sul Gizio complete with cafe/bar ,old fountain and excellent restaurant Il Torchio in the Piazza Zannelli is only 10 minutes drive away .To conclude we experienced the true unspoilt Italy only 90 minutes from Rome.An excellent choice if you want a quiet relaxed holiday " away from it all".
