We had a diner in this hotel and spent one night. The location of this hotel is simply marvellous, alone on a top hill in between two of the most beautiful bays of the Italian coast. The hotel is an old castle blending the past with all modern amenities. The interior is decorated with many paintings, statues and old era's furniture. Rooms although not so big are comfortable and nice with an amazing seaview. But the top of the top was the restaurant with its large windows and uncomparable view, its cosiness, perfect service and high style italian food. In high season the pool and gardens must be a great experience. We plan to come back to this lovely place as soon as we can.

My wife and I can't say enough about this hotel. When we drove through the front entranceway...which was a pretty crazy experience since the road leading up to it was steep and windy, it was such an amazing place to stay. My wife first words were..."we're staying in a castle???" She was excited.

Our room was huge with high ceilings. The property was great to walk around and explore. The private beach made our first swim in the Mediterranean a memorable one. And then there is the elevator that takes you down through the hillside to town.

We also got to eat at the restaurant at the hotel with its great staff, delicious food and incredible views of the harbor.

If you get the chance, stay at this hotel. It will be a memory well worth making!

Grand Hotel dei Castelli is indeed a former castle, built of grey stone, set high on a promontory overlooking the town of Sestri Levante and the sea on both sides. Although the town is unremarkable, it is a convenient and I suspect less expensive base for exploring the Cinque Terre region. The hotel is reached by a long sloping driveway or by foot through a cave leading to an elevator.
Our room was in one of the outbuildings. The exterior was similar in style to the rest of the castle but the interior was an oddly sterile mix of minimalist modern and antique. However it was large, clean and well provisioned with a lovely view over the town. The bathroom had the ubiquitous bidet and flexible shower head - a feature I much prefer to the stationary shower heads so common in North America. Beds were as firm as they always are in Italian hotels. One drawback was the fact that the WiFi didn't work in our room, only in the main building.
Breakfast was usual for better hotels in Italy - sweet cakes, cold cuts, breads, yogurt, some hot items - good. The windows of the breakfast room had a wonderful view down to the sea at the back of the hotel. Our group also had dinner at the hotel and it was merely mediocre. There were better options in town, a few minutes walk away.
However, the highlight of the hotel was the walk around and behind the castle. We regretted only having time to begin our exploration. Formal Italian gardens led to woods and a path along cliffs above the ocean. The views were breath-taking.

...and what a mistake! We were on our way from Bellagio to Tuscany and stopped in Sestri Levante for just one magical night. It was a bit hard to find the narrow cobbled road leading up to the hotel (had to drive through a church parking area) but it was well worth the trouble.
Asked for a room with a view of the water and was not disappointed. A dramatic stone circular staircase in the old castle section leads to room 66 which was spacious, unique, and had a private terrace overlooking both the harbor and town. Except for an overnight thunderstorm it was extremely quiet - did not hear any other guests on our floor.
We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and both were very good. No need to trek (or take the elevator) down to the town for a meal.
If we return would definitely stay a few days to explore the hotel and grounds.

Room Tip: Room 66 has incredible views of harbor and town from room and private terrace

Stayed there with my wife for six nights. We booked garden view but could still see the sea from the 3rd floor.
Huge rooms, high ceilings, very quiet, excellent bed. The breakfast is nothing to brag about but still OK. The food in the restaurant, though, was fantastic. The only real downside was the dismal internet reception in the room. If you ever wanted to connect to the outside world you had to sit down in the lobby. Staff was great and helpful.
