We stayed at Villa Erato for 5 nights in May, 2018, and we left with mixed feelings. We rent our apartment in Paris, so we understand from both sides the challenges of renting a property.
From the photos on the website, we had expected an area where we could be outside to enjoy the views, have a drink, a meal with good weather. We were not realistic. Yes, there are wonderful views from the apartment. The garden pictured is reached by two more flights of stairs and was knee high in weeds during our visit. Even if it were in good form, it takes some effort to get there. Not what we had pictured at all.
The kitchen could be better equipped if you want to cook any sort of a meal. There are enough dishes, glasses, even pots and pans. However, we had to ask for a knife that cut more than butter, which Bruno did bring promptly. We suggest that the owners add a paring knife as well as the large knife. The few cooking utensils that were there had broken handles and should be replaced. In their current state, they are dangerous. We were able to manage, but it took some ingenuity. One of the coffee pots did not work at all and should be discarded. There was a bit of sugar and a bottle of balsamic vinegar in the cupboard and that was it. You will have to go to the store immediately. You are given one roll of toilet paper and two small packets of soap; thus, you need to bring even your own hand soap. The website is misleading.
The apartment was very clean, and the beds are comfortable. The pillows are like sleeping on a marble slab, but we found that often in Italy. Perhaps it’s a cultural preference. The master bedroom is very large with lots of closet space and even plenty of hangers, unusual in so many places. The second bedroom is upstairs and is small. The stairs could be a problem with young children, so it’s important to note that when making your decision. The wifi works well.
Because the elevator was not working due to an electrical problem the day we arrived and we had to carry our luggage (luckily, small bags) up all of the stairs, we appreciated very much the elevator that helps with part of the climb.
The location is excellent. Praiano is great because it is not inundated with tourists and cruise ships like Amalfi and Positano, yet you are close to both. It was wonderful to be able to walk to restaurants in the evening, and there are two small grocery stores within walking distance as well as bus stops.
Communication could be better. Inquiries before our arrival were seldom answered, and there are no written instructions in the apartment except the very complicated list concerning the separation of trash. Bruno did meet us and gave us some restaurant suggestions while apologizing for his English, which certainly was better than our Italian. We had booked the apartment in January and had not carefully reexamined the website since the booking. At 10pm the night before we left, we received an email telling us that we had to be out by 10 the next morning. Yes, it was our fault for not having checked the website, but we think as property owners that it would have been better to remind the guests upon arrival that the hour of departure is fixed. Luckily, the transfer company with whom we had scheduled a car was able to accommodate a last minute change. Other reviewers raved about the excellent communication, their warm welcome, etc. Sadly, we did not experience any of that.
Voilà, our mixed feelings.
We recently stayed at Villa Erato. What a wonderful apartment. Beautifully furnished with a mix of antique and modern furniture , a dishwasher and a washing machine. The views from the apartment were spectacular. We were able to see Positano and Capri. Tha apartment is within walking distance to a number of restaurants, a supermarket and Cafe Sol which is open when other places are closed for siesta. Handy when you have a 7 year old ! I would definitely recommend Villa Erato to other travellers. It's a beautiful apartment in a beautiful part of the world.
This property was top notch with ocean views from balconies off the kitchen, dining room and bedroom. Plus a shaded private area with views to relax outdoors. Location was walking distance to a food market, restaurants, info center and SITA bus stop. No need for a car. This made a relaxing base to come back to after day visits to other parts of the Amalfi coast via the SITA bus. We definitely recommend Villa Erato.
We really enjoyed our stay in Praiano. The apartment was perfect for the four of us. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the fact that the town was less hectic while still having everything we needed. The apartment was close to the bus stop as well as the market. Roberto was helpful every step of the way from the time we booked until the time we left. We can't recommend it enough.
We stayed at Villa Erato in the last week of October. It was easy to find, following the directions Roberto and Lia gave us advance. Lia was on hand to meet us on arrival, to show us up to the villa (it's three stories up from street level), and to offer advice.
The villa is well-furnished and clean and has lovely views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, looking towards Positano and Capri, and is close to a handful of nice restaurants and good grocers butchers and fishmongers. Praiano is a good base for visiting all places on the Amalfi coast. We drove a hire car and parked it on the edge of town for free (just 100 yards from the villa) but you could easily manage without, as the bus service is good, cheap and reliable.
