When we arrived in Porte Venere our host recommended "Paul" to us. Cozy and beachy and a great view of the water and piazza. The service was great. They were attentive and helpful.

The first night we ordered Filetto (perfecto!), Insalate miste (meh), pizza cotto (amazing), pasta pomedoro and grilled calamari. The house red was great and went well with all we ordered. The locals were also eating there. People stopped in and chatted with those sitting around us.

Later in the week we went back for "just pizza." The wood oven produces a perfectly alive and crisp crust and the toppings were fresh. (no canned mushrooms)

I can't say it was a terrible place but it wasn't good either. Poor choice from the menu and poor quality of food. Decent service and a great wine helped us to enjoy the night and to forget about the rest.

Stopped here for lunch. The four stagioni pizza had a nice crust and a reasonable taste. The house white wine was refreshing and the grilled vegetables were good once olive oil was added. The service was friendly.

Staff was EXTREMELY UNFRIENDLY. It took the waiter 20 min to come to our table. We refused the coperto (knowing that we would pay anyway, but we didn't want bread) and the guy simply told us that we had to accept it an it would stay on the table. First red flag. For entries some mixed seafood and main dish was a pasta with lobster. Entries were good, I personally liked the fried shrimp and the mussels in a tomato sauce. Unfortunately when the pasta came I realized it was pasta with lobster shell. The chef threw some tiny pieces of lobster that were still in the shell. Can you imagine how ridiculous it was to try to eat that? Second red flag. So we decided we wouldn't order a dessert and of ourse the waiter wasn't really happy. So at the end of our "lovely" dinner, we literally waited 30-40 min for the check. The waiter ignored us. So I stood up and I said that I was leaving. This time he came. I made sure to let him know that that had been the most disappointing dinner in Porto Venere.

On a Tuesday in mid January there was not many options available for lunch in Portovenere but there were a number of diners visible in this restaurant which I had not dined at before but had noticed on previous visits as having been revamped and looked quite stylish. After a quick walk along the harbour to check if there was any alternatives we returned to this restaurant and was not disappointed. We decided to share both antipasti and mains. For Antipasta we had the fantasia di mare beautifully presented and comprising anchovies, squid and smoked salmon together with a dish of stuffed mussels . For mains Lobster Catalan Style and Sea Bream were the choices washed down with 3 bottles of beer, a litre of pleasant house white and coffees and amari to finish came to a reasonable 135 euro for the three of us. Definitely will go back.
