This is the 3rd year in a row I have enjoyed staying at this charming, welcoming agriturismo! A working farm since the 1500's, the Amici family continues to grow many of the products used in the delicious meals served. Rooms are large, simple and comfortable. Meals are served in a classic Italian dining room--stone walls, tile floors, beamed ceilings; the dinner menu offers local products which the signora in the kitchen combines to create masterpieces of gustatory delight. I cannot say enough about each dish! The ancient stone buildings sit high on a hill above the town of Norcia, center of Italian pork products--salame, salsicce, prosciutto, etc. As well as truffles and chocolate! Who needs more! If you go towards the end of June, be sure to drive a bit further to view the Pian Grande, a valley filled with yellow and red and purple flowers as far as the eye can see. It is located just 1 1/2 hr. drive from Perugia and you could even just go for lunch! But I highly recommend at least one overnight, so as to enjoy their excellent breakfasts--including the fresh, warm ricotta brought in every morning!

We stayed at this agriturismo the nights of Nov. 1 and 2, 2013, which fell on the All Saints/All Souls weekend, a big holiday in Italy. The name, I believe, is a sort of double entendre, as "amici' means friends, but is also the name of the family that operates the place. the agriturismo is also a very busy dinner restaurant and caters to many in the area. Indeed, on Saturday night they were so busy that they set up a satellite dining room in a nearby building. With all of that, we, and apparently other agriturismo guests (I think the place was full or nearly so), were well taken care of at dinner both nights by the friendly staff. We were the only Americans and no others, staff or guests, appeared to be an English speaker, but we got along well and I highly recommend the place, both for its accommodations and food, which was local cuisine. Norcia is a lovely little town, way to the east of the beaten tourist track, and that weekend was hosting a proscuitto festival (the town is known for its pork products and as the birthplace of St. Benedict and his sister Ste. Scholastica). Up in the mountains nearby is the Piano Grande, a large, flat valley plain about 4,000 ft. above sea level, and Castellucio, a truly tiny town. We went horseback riding there at the Rancho Castellucio, on Haflingers, an originally Tyrolian Alps breed of which we own 2 at home. They adapt well to the Sibillini Mountains and to our somewhat similar climate in central New Hampshire.

My entire family recently spent a couple of nights in Norcia. I had to talk a couple of them into it, as Norcia is not on the standard Tuscan-Umbrian circuit. To a person, we were all very impressed. I would encourage anyone desiring a bit of the true Italy to give this place a try. I stayed here with a friend a few years ago, as well, when we discovered this wonderful region. There is no train service, and Norcia is easiest to reach by car. For those travelers who expect everyone to speak English, I suggest sticking to the traditional venues, but if you want a taste of genuine Italian hospitality, wonderful scenery and genuinely exceptional cuisine, you'd be hard pressed to do better. When we wandered around the beautiful walled town of Norcia, popping into pastry shops and the myriad of cured meat shops, we would chat with the locals and were often asked where we were staying. When we told them we were at the Casale degli Amici, the response was unanimous: "Oh, the chef there is famous throughout the valley." And, justifiably so. Carlo and his staff, and the family who run the place really know what they're doing. The rooms, the service and the dinner? Well, we could not have enjoyed our stay more. Bravo, Ernesto and family!

Staying at this lovely agriturismo was one of the highlights of our honeymoon in Italy. Ernesto gave us a warm welcome. Our room was spacious with a very comfortable bed. And the home-cooked food was delicious, especially the lasagne with grated truffle. Dining (and breakfasting) in the restaurant was enhanced by the stunning views. And the location is ideal if you want to explore the Monti Sibillini National Park.

We really like this place. Nice homemade Umbrian food and super friendly staff. Is situated some 5 km outside of Norcia and at our first visit they even drove us back to our hotel in Norcia. The second time we visited them we stayed with them and the rooms were also in a good standard.
