Looking for a night’s stay in Marsala, Booking.com came up with a bit of a snip for a room at the 5 star Grand (or now apparently renamed ) New Palace Hotel. Sounded great - never stayed at a 5 star. When we entered our room the poorly lit bathroom- no light over the mirror- had no ventilation, natural or mechanical, and stank overpoweringly of drains. We asked for a different room and were later shown to one on the second floor. Only trouble was it looked out on the railway line some 50 yards away. We returned to the original room, where luckily the smell had subsided, probably due to us running the taps earlier to fill the traps. I give the hotel a black mark for this. If you have a complaint, and ours was certainly a legitimate one, you should be upgraded, not downgraded. Presumably as we had the cheapo deal, they weren’t too bothered about us. Not great on service or facilities – not even an international TV channel like Sky news in our room. Not very 5 star.
The décor is heavy, over stuffed plush sofas, artificial flowers, Chinese vases with dried pampas grass, dark wood abounds throughout - somewhat depressing to our eye.

The pool’s good, though I did notice the few people there were using their own towels. Don’t 5 stars offer you a towel for the pool? Breakfast featured enough cloyingly sweet cakes and buns to grace a Buckingham Palace tea party. Perfect if you crave a sweet fest first thing in the morning. The area is run down and largely industrial. We felt slightly uneasy walking back from our restaurant mid-evening.

In sharp contrast, the next night we went on to the very reasonably priced B&B – The Best – at Mazara del Vallo. Both room and bathroom were much larger than the 5 star hotel. No smell. The air conditioning wasn’t turned off at 10.30 pm, the curtains prettier, the breakfast caffe latte hotter and more plentiful. Gaspare, the owner, couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful, even providing us with a beach umbrella. Star ratings are not always all they’re cracked up to be!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms at the back of the hotel overlooking the railway tracks.

A clean, traditionally decorated hotel with large swimming pool. Very tranquil with professional and friendly staff who spoke good english were available 24/7, Not much to do around the hotel area but the food and tranquility was priceless. Definitely would recommend this Hotel.

Quiet with beautifully appointed, classically styled rooms. Staff is friendly and helpful. Fastidiously clean. Free gated parking. Close to downtown (a short drive). No beach access but unnecessary because the pool is fantastic, altho' parents with tiny non-swimmers will have to keep them out of the VERY deep end. Don't know why it's not packed altho' most don't consider Marsala a major vacation destination. Why I don't know, but I secretly hope it remains this peaceful. A great place to use as a base for day drives to Erice, Trapani, the salt flats, Agrigento, etc.

The hotel located far from the site notice but close Enright to all actions even going by foot. (better with car). The lobby managers and all other workers was very polite and kind. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast is simple and tasty. After tree nights in the hotel we left with strong will to come back at the next vacation.
